I use 1clickDVD Copy with a Sony DRU-720A burner of windows XP. It used to take only about 30-40 minutes from start to finish for each DVD. Now it takes close to 2 hours. I tried updating the firmware, but it made no difference. I'd appreciate any help on solving the problem. Thanks in advance.

Which DVD are you trying to backup? Maybe compression rate is to blame?

this problem has been going on for the last 5 or so dvds i've tried to copy. My average burn speed went from about 8.5x to about 1.31x.

Have you changed the media that you are using? Tried using diferent programs such as DVD Shrink, CloneDVD, etc.? Have you also tried uninstalling 1clickDVD Copy and reinstalling it?

I believe your DMA is not turn on. Go to your Device Manager, click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, right click on Primary IDE Channel and go to Properties. Go to Advance Settings tab and change the Transfer Mode to DMA if available. Do the same for Secondary IDE Channel. Restart your machine and happy burning!

Being in PIO could be a problem. It's not hard to check. If one has Nero, they just need to look in Infotools. In Windows there is the Device manager as pointed out. It would be nice if switching into DMA worked as simply as nasayin said. Often I've found the secondary IDE channel needs to be uninstalled to get the DMA to switch from PIO to DMA. Hard drives are usually on the Primary and optical drives on the Secondary. When you uninstall the OS picks the IDE channel back up on reboot. Recheck the drives to make sure they're in DMA after rebooting. Uninstalling the IDE channel is the sure way of doing the job if you need to change a drive back to DMA from PIO.

According to Nero infotool, my primary ide channel is as follows:
Master: TSST corp DVD-ROM TS-H352C
DMA off
Autorun on
Slave: SONY DVD RW DRU-720A
DMA on
Autorun on
Secondary IDE channel:
Master: Maxtor 6V160E0
DMA on
I use the top drive to rip my DVDs and the bottom to burn them. I see that the DMA is of on the top drive, but I don't how to change it. Also, I noticed from my 1click DVD report that the change happened after I burned my first dual layer DVD.

Did you read the part where I said to uninstall the IDE channel and reboot?

BTW, that set up you have is a bit different. Most systems have the Primary reserved for hard drives and have optical drives on the secondary. In some situations I've seen it set with a Primary Master HDD and a Primary Slave optical drive, but not many. If it were mine, I'd put the Slave optical on the Secondary.

so to be sure (I'm not that good with computers and I don't want to screw up), I need to uninstall the primary IDE channel, and then simply reboot? The fact that my IDE channels are the opposite of most peoples won't screw anything up?

As long as the HDD is the Master and the optical drive is the Slave, there should be no problems. The system is supposed to be Plug N Play. So when you uninstal a channel and reboot, the system is supposed to pick it back up and the drives should be in DMA. I don't know how I can state that any clearer.

You only need to troubleshoot if the drive kicks back into PIO. Do the uninstall and check after the reboot. Then if the drive is still in PIO, do the troubleshooting. Otherwise, just keep an eye on things for a while to make sure your drive stays in DMA. You can spend time troubleshooting and never find the problem if it's not constant.

Thanks everyone...I go burn at efficient speeds once again. The only weird thing left is that on the device manager, the secondary ide channel doesn't show up at all even though it's where the hard drive is. oh well, as long as my 1click works fine. Thanks again

It should look like this when you expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Look at the circled segment in the Deivice Manager.
