Hey, I'm a dirty newbie and i'm having dramas with playing back my backed up dvds on dvd players. The backed up dvd will play normally on my computer's dvd drive but not elsewhere. This happens with all my backups.
They used to work fine but now they ALL don't work properly. The screen begins to stutter and pixelate. Is my dvd burner dead? :(
I would dearly appreciate any assistance :)
Thanks
Mark.

Have you updated your DVD burner's firmware recently? What program(s) are you using to burn your movies and at what speed? Also, what kind of media are you using for your backups?
XPS Gen.4 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB+750GB Seagate HD, BenQ DW1650, BenQ DW1655, Samsung SE-S184M (External) Dimension E520 3.0GHz 3.5GB RAM, 74GB+500GB Seagate HD, Samsung SH-S183, Samsung SE-S184M (External)

I haven't updated my firmware. I'm sorry, but I'm not entirely sure what firmware is or does, I'd appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction..
But as for the media, I've used various brands, it doesn't seem to matter which one.
I've used dvdshrink and vision express 2(also having severe synching issues with VE2). I think the speed is 2X, maybe.
Thanks for your help

Cool, thanks for more info. What make/model is your drive? You might want to download the latest firmware for it. And as far as firmware, here is the herrie.org definition of it:
Firmware is a small piece of software which is stored in a programmable ready-only memory chip (also called programmable ROM). This is a permanent part of a computing device (Printers, Modems, CD/DVD-ROM, CD/DVD+/-R(W) etc).
Firmware is created and tested like software (using microcode simulation). When ready, it can be distributed like other software and, using a special user interface, installed in the programmable read-only memory by the user.
When looking in specific at firmware for DVD+/-R(W) drives this means the following. The firmware contains amongst other things the following information:
-Which recordable media are supported.
-At which speed a certain media is supported.
-A number of parameters indicating how a certain discs should be written (laser power, distance between pits etc).
-Maximum read speed for DVD Video's.
-The number of allowed region changes for Video DVD's.
As far as media goes, stick to Taiyo Yudens and Verbatims. You can read all around the forums and most of us stick with these brands. Media is usually the culprit when it comes to playback issues such as freezing, skipping, and pixelating. Look at the Media forum for more details on different types of media. Also, you should try burning at 4x or 8x (The verbatims that I use now burn better at 8x[Thanks Saugmon]) Usually the Slower the burn, the better. But 2x is a bit too slow, go with 4x and see how things work out for ya. =)

Just looked it up and it seems you are right when you said its a troublesome drive. Sony doesn't have support for OEM drives like this but the drive you have, SONY DW U18A is a rebadged Lite-ON SOHW-812S so you might need to do some crossflashing of firmwares here...also alot are saying that Nero is very picky with this drive that it produces alot of errors once it is crossflashed. So you might not want to update the firmware, just use better media and burn your backups at 4x. Good luck and Happy Burning!

Use this utility to determine the model# and installed firmware for your drive, just download and run it;
http://flashman.rpc1.org/Firmware/DVD-CD_firmware_detect.exe
Note: The site above has been down for the last couple of days, if it's still down when trying to get the download, you can also use nero's info tool or DVD decrypter(under TOOLS menu I believe) to determine what version is installed in your drive.
Here's a screen shot that will also help;
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48417
If your drive's firmware needs to be updated, you can get it here (DR8USOS.zip);
http://www.liteonit.com.tw/ODD/English/e_downloads/e_firmware_dvd...
Just a few things to add:
Make sure your players will recognize and play the media you're putting in them by reading the manual.
As stated, try and burn your backups to disk at 4x speed and do so on media that's considered to be good quality (look for made in japan on the packaging). If those disks played well at one time, but no longer do so now, this could be a sign that you're using poor quality media.
Cut down on your file sizes so as not to burn too close to the disk's outer edge, trim the size down to 4300MB. In shrink goto:edit-->preferences, in the preferences tab choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300.
If you have a older player and are having playback problems, you could buy a new one (they're pretty cheap) which will play all formats, or you could try booktyping DVD+R disks as DVD-ROMs. Here's some info on the proceedure if interested;
