Where/how do people manufacture mod chips & swap magic products?

Hi.

I got Swap Magic last week and its awesome... but I had the thought recently...... where the hell do they actually manufucture these mod chips and swap magic slide tools etc?

Because they must need the use of proper factory machines? Have Sony or the anti-piracy assholes ever persued closing down the factories (if thats what they use) like the feds will try and close down coke/heroin manufacturing plants?

I think in Europe it is totally illegal to even sell modchips. I assume that modchip manufacturing is done in country where they could care less about game piracy.

I remember sometime back where $ony had sued a manufacturer, but that was a while back and I wouldn't even know where to look for the article where i read that.

i think that it is a very grey subject. Once they have a 100% sure fire way to shut them down i figure that they would.

But there is always that very small loophole. You are LEGALLY allowed to have one back up copy of games and movies you own (or so i am told although the new disclaimers on movies would dispute that)(they say that they can not be copied even for personal use). So if it is legal to back them up for personal use, then you still need a way to be able to play that back up or it would be pointless to make them. This is where Swap Magic and mod chips slipped through.
They can always sit back and claim that there product is sold solely for the use of playing legally backed up materials.

Just like how stores can openly sell pipes, bowls and bongs.
They say it is for use with tobacco products only. We all know it isn't true but they can't stop them becaues selling the stuff isn't illegal. It is what the people do after they have it that is.

That is about the best reason i could think up.

Here in the US, we are allowed to install modchips into our ps2's/xbox's. That hardware is our own property. We can do with it as we please.

BUTTT... only if those modchips do not have bios which will bypass the copyright protection, ie DMS4's and Matrix's. Now you're saying "wait... my xxx plays backups with these chips". That's because you've flashed them with a third-party bios (which technically is illegal to use).

These bios are illegal because they are created from reverse-engineering. This results in the third party's flash using some of the code which is MS's/Sonys property, obviously without permission, making them illegal to use.
