Ok, I know this is a long time argument. I don't mean to start it up again, but i need to know. Which is better, well lets not say "better" lets use more practicul. anyway, I would like to know what the difference is between DVD+r and DVD-R? Which is better or more practical... or is it all personal preference? OR just what is the difference between to two? Both type work in my DVD players, so that is not an issue but what would be a decideing factor in chooseie +R or -R? thanks

Five years ago, DVD-R could claim to be more compatible than DVD+R. With booktyping which can only be done on DVD+Rs, you are actually emulating the DVD-ROM booktype of store-bought DVDs. Either way, unless you have a 10-year old DVD player, you will not have problems with either format. I just prefer DVD+Rs. They seem to be ahead in all areas: speed (haven't seen 16X -Rs) and price. Also, with Fujis at one time, the +Rs were made in Japan and the -Rs were made in Taiwan. I usually buy whatever is on sale. Name brand is more important.

Many pre-2004 DVD players have a problem playing non booktyped DL media.
I don't burn a DVD that is not booktyped DVD-ROM.

Quote: The -R are more reliable media
-R being more reliable is a myth, nothing more ...
Quote: During my study of rewritable DVD formats it seemed very clear to me that DVD-R(W) standard was not as well designed as DVD+R(W) (or even DVD-RAM). And although some serious efforts have been put in the latest revisions of the - format to fix some of the original problems (at the cost of a much increased complexity), it still remains technically inferior to +, due to some intrinsic weaknesses (e.g. pre-pits). This is not very surprising, as Sony and Philips have a much longer experience at defining standards than Pioneer (and several key patents), and they also had the advantage to publish their standards after their competitors.
This is the conclusion of the article that my sig links to (why +R is the superior format) at CD Freaks

Plus or Dash?
It all comes down to the format that your: DVD-RW drive/s,stand alone player/s,and game console/s prefer off of your burner.
Results will vary by individual:
Brand/model# of DVD-RW drive.
All the drives that will play your backups.
Both work great for you?
That's all that matters. No compatability issues for you and your players. Some peeps don't have that luck.
My rule of thumb:
Depends on the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive.
Benq/Plextor/LG/Lite-on/some sony can booktype the plus format to dvd-rom. This will make backups a lot higher of percentage to be recognized by dvd drives. If you have any of those, definitely the plus format.
Stand alone players definitely have a harder time recognizing my Benq dash backups. Very little issues with my booktyped backups, and this is a boatload of different players! Not just a couple drives.
Brands like Pioneer/NEC burners most likely prefer the dash. These drives can use hacked firmware to booktype, but if not-usually the dash works better.
So if your burner has the bitsetting capability of booktyping: Plus format
If not: Dash format

Well my reason for asking this question is that... I've been burning home movies, backing up some of my more favorite movies before lending them out to others, and such. I've been doing this for about a little over a year now. And for the past year I have always used DVD-R. So all my backups and home movies, are all on DVD-Rs. Now was putting them all on -Rs and useing -Rs all together a bad idea? Like they all work for me and everything. But should I put them all on +Rs?
My main question is I used -Rs, they work great. So is the diference between + and - mainly personal preferance? Or are there quality and longer life issues there as well? Thanks

Quote: Conclusion
During my study of rewritable DVD formats it seemed very clear to me that DVD-R(W) standard was not as well designed as DVD+R(W) (or even DVD-RAM).
Although the arguments presented in this document might look like technical details to most readers, disc format is what defines the limits of what drives can do with a given medium, both in terms of performances and features. Therefore, the technical advantages of the DVD+R(W) format will with time turn into faster, more powerful and more reliable drives for end users. This is already the case today, and the gap will continue to increase as DVD+R(W) drives will exploit more and more of the advantages of the + format. However, as history showed, the best ideas are not guaranteed to win on technology markets, and only time will tell which format becomes the new standard.

Let's see ... If you and someone else had a contest to see who could build the best sand castle, and you had the advantage of watching the other person build his first ... and you could see exactly how it was being built .. good and bad ... then you built yours using the benefits of the other person's trials and tribulations ... you would have a decided advantage, right? Well, the +R format was conceived, designed and implemented this way ...
