I was curious about compatibility with my PS2 and DVD+Rs, so I did some testing. All the discs that I tested were NOT booktyped to DVD-ROM:

YUDEN000-T02 :Not compatible
Ritek-R03-02 :Compatible
Sony-D11-00 (MIT) :Not compatible
MCC-002-00 (MIT):Compatible
CMC-MAG-F01-00 :Compatible

All discs were burned on a Pioneer DVD-A09 at 4x.

The funny thing is that the Taiyo Yuden is compatible with every DVD player I own...

The Riteks loaded the fastest and the CMCs the slowest, but there was not a big difference; about 5 seconds or so, but that may have been because of the movie rather than the disc. On all discs, I increased the compatibility by re-building the VMGs and making the DVD structure more efficient prior to burning.

The PS2 they were tested on is a version 3 (or is it version 2; I forget).

Does this make sense to anyone?? TY is the best out of the bunch and has by far the best scans. Heck, they even scan better than the original DVD-ROM in some cases.

The reason I started testing playback on the PS2 is that I am going to begin backing up some of my games. It seems that a few that I own like MVC2 are impossible to find in stores and on eBay they can run around $100, however I tested everything using DVD Movies backed up on DVD+R. I did not test any DVD-R, but all I have are TTG02 or whatever those TDK ones are.

Do PS2 game backups make a difference, or is it the same as DVD backups?

i am not starting a big thing on fake tys, but i thought the T's were fake. i have GG000077. i know they are real. anyways. i never use DVD+R because DVD-R has a higher compatability rate. i use ty 4x dvd-rs with all my games and movies and i have never had a problem.

I understand that DVD-R should have higher compatibility, but why is it that CMC MAG DVD+R works on the PS2 and not the TY??? The only difference is that the CMCs are 4x and the TYs are 8x, but I burned both at 4x... It can't be that the PS2 only likes 4x media though, because the Riteks are 8x as well.

Out of all those discs I tested, the TYs and the Sonys have the best scans with DVDinfo and those are the only two that are not working...

When I decide to start backing up my ps2 games, I may buy TY DVD-R though, but should I buy 4x or 8x?? Also, if I get a new burner or some hacked firmware for my Pioneer and start booktyping to DVD-ROM, do you think this will make a difference (with the DVD+R of course)?? The reason is that DVD+R work much better for my DVD players and they burn with fewer errors.

Try burning one of those +8x yuden000-T02 at 8x and see how that ps2 reacts to it.For me, Quality media performs better at the higher burn speed. Holds true with verbatim as well.Just may work better for you? Can't hurt!

I've tested my backups on around 6 ps2 consoles. Only one of them wouldn't play either booktyped or dash media from my benq 1620.The rest played just about everything.

1 of these would not play verbatim +4x that coded as ricohpn-01,but would play the verbatim +4x MCC-002.

Those ps2's can be very picky. That 1 ps2 of a buddy is the only drive I have found that wouldn't play my booktyped backups.

I've never backed up a game,so can't help you there.

I will give the 8x a try. However, how about 6x? No one ever mentions this speed. Is it just because it is not a multiple of 4 or not a power of 2??

I have no option to burn at 6x on my benqs when using DVD Shrink and autoburn with Nero. That reminds me of something I missed.

Can you try another burn program?

What's your process for dvd backups?

Some of the pickiest drives that play my backups can tell a difference between my Nero burns and dvd decrypter's burns. Nero kicks decrypter's butt when it comes to my benq booktyped backups. I do strive to have the highest compatability rate for my backups, and I've seen some weird stuff when it comes to stand alone compatability.

Here's your list:

YUDEN000-T02 :Not compatible- 8x/12x
Ritek-R03-02 :Compatible ---4x-8x
Sony-D11-00 (MIT) :Not compatible--- 4x-8x
MCC-002-00 (MIT):Compatible ---4x
CMC-MAG-F01-00 :Compatible --2.4x-4x

I added how fast I'd burn these for the best success to the side of it for any of my benqs.

Do you get: No disc/Dirty disc/wrong format/or wrong region error?

From what I have seen, the dash backups from pioneer fare better for stand alone compatability.

Thanks for all that info. I will do some experimenting with those burn speeds.

On my standalones, the TYs kick butt!!! The Riteks always play through with no problem, but they will only work on my picky players if I do some editing to the DVD structure.

I burn using ImgBurn 1.2 or ImgBurn 1.1 (only for Shrink when I want the PC to shut down). I also burned a lot of movies with DVDD, but I do not remember when I switched.

I do not like Nero for some reason though. Maybe because it looks too pretty. I use it only for DVD Folder backups and those are very rare for me...I think I did use it a couple of times recently though, because I screwed something up on my PC and the buffer kept on running out in ImgBurn (it actaully made it all the way through the software buffer and down to 10% on the drive buffer, but luckily no coasters). I fixed this by changing the software buffer to 30MB and now it does not even go below 99% for some reason...

If you think I should experiment with others, I have Nero, DVDD, ImgBurn, CloneDVD2, DVDFab Platinum (not sure if this has a burning engine though) & Blindwrite. I also have Sony DVD Architect which I think has a burning engine & DVDLab Pro which has some burn capabilities.

As for Backup process:

I rip with DVD Decrypter 99.9% of the time. I do Non ARccOS/Ripguard movies in File Mode and the ARccOS/Ripguard ones in IFO Mode.

After the rip, I completely re-building the DVD menus and making the navigation more efficient. This greatly improves compatibility with lower end media and older players. Also, the movie loads in in a couple of seconds compared to 15+ seconds. I also remove all garbage/unused menus & PGCs & move the VTS's if I have to (meaning if the main movie is in VTS_04, I will move it to VTS_01).

After this, I process the DVD through Shrink. This both puts it in ISO form and does a structure test at the same time. If Shrink fails to analyze, this means I forgot to do something, or did something wrong.

Next, I open the ISO with ImgBurn and burn at 4x...

In my players, I do not remember what message I get because I do not have many incompatible discs any more. In the PS2, the drive just grinds a bit and I stop it after about 20 seconds so I do not ruin it. I bet that would give a Disc Read Error.

I will have to go through my DVD backups to figure out what the standalones say...I think on some discs, I get a "Please insert Disc" and on others a "Please check Disc". I think the Riteks give the Insert Disc (only the ones I burned before I began re-building and re-structuring), and the Sony's give the "Please Check Disc" message.

I did burn a few on those TTG02 or whatever the TDK DVD-R are. These loaded very nicely on my old Samsung (very picky) and I did not have to rebuild the DVD in any way. I did not try this on the PS2 though.

Based on my experiences, I would have guessed the Pioneer burned DVD+R better, but that was when comparing reults of DVD+R to my Plextor px-716a when I had it. It burned the Riteks with about 1/4 the average errors (15 compared to 60). Also, the TYs burn almost flawless. These burn with an average of below 1 PI error and almost always with 0 total PO Failures/Errors. Also, the CMC Mags and Sonys burn with very similar results. Both average about 4 PI and 0 PO.

I am strongly considering getting DVD-R, but I was afraid of how well the Pioneer would handle them, just because I figured if it burns DVD+R this well, it may have been built/calibrated for those.

when burning video games you should always burn at 4x. i read that somewhere. i guess since the data is so dense or something. anyway i allways burn at 4x on 4x dvd-rs. why spend the extra money for 8x dvdrs when you only gain about 4 mins. and anyway i also burn my 4x tys at 8x speeds for movies. they are good quailty and they can handle it.
ps2- dvd decrypter
xbox- FlashFXP, qwix,apache 3
movies-DVD Shrink / dvdrat, vso copytodvd
music cdrs- nero
ps2 rebuilding-isobuster,cdvdgen,iml2iso
