I use 8X and 16X media DVD's, and all the DVD's play great without any problem. I have the newest PS2, just bought 2 days ago. I use 2 plastic tools only, and swap magic 3.6.

1 - Am I killing the PS2 with this speed of burn?

2- is the recommended 4X speed due to compatability or to PS2 breakdown?

3- I read somewhere that burning at 8 and 16X speed could damage the laser! is this true?
should I reburn everything on a low speed media?

4- I also was told that I shouldn't use the PS2 with burned DVD's for more than 2 hours a day, is this true?

thanks a lot

I actually did try to burn at 4x, but it seems that the media doesn't support the slower speeds. I didn't notice any slow down in burn speed.
I will go and buy some sony or Verbatum DVD's with multiple speeds.

but you didn't explaine why the 4X? i heard that PS2 Slim reads at 2.5 and doesn't care about what speed the media is burnt.

i read in another thread that the laser work harder with higher speed, is this true? how? why is it different than a regular DVD player?

I appreciate your help.

Thanks

Ok, my last question on this thread, if I burn at 4x, is the PS2 safe for long time playing, like 6 or 8 hours continouse?

Some one told me that with burned games I shouldn't play more than 2 hours continouse.

Thanks

it depends on the media you using, if you use bad media, your ps2 won't last long.

You should always use good media, such as verbatim and so on.
About writing speeds, it is said everywhere that 4x is the only and right speed, but take the fact that dvd burners are making progress and sometimes newer burners write better on faster speeds than lower speeds. You should do some testing to see wich media and wich speed gives the best result.
Lasers burn out on new v12 slimline PS2s, if you have v13-v14 then you're fine.

Oh, this is what is confusing me, how do I know if I am using good media!? testings show great results at 8x and 16x, no grinding or clicking, no skipping with DVD games.

This 100 DVD spindle costed me like $70 it is a memorix DVD+R 16X.

So should I wait untill the laser is gone then i would know?!

thank you

You have either v12 or v13. SPCH 7500X are version v14. Check it out here http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm If you have v12 then you need laser fix defenitely! Otherwise you'll burn your laser out.

You mean Memorex? Memorex is considered to be the worst media at all, read about it here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341
Although there have been people who use memorex media and they say that everything is flawless, still i don't recomend it.
Quality of the burned media usually is rated by the PIF level. You can test your DVD with Nero Tools and see the PIF level. If i'm not mistaken then the higher PIF level shows lower quality. Another thing about memorex, it is sai that they tend to not to work after six months or so.

"those instructions saying to burn at lowest speed are outdated. today's burners burn much better at 8-12x than the burners of 5 years ago at 2x."

The reason that people say to burn at 4X is because burning at higher speeds can put more stress on your laser, thus causing it to crap out on you sooner.

I did my first (ever) copies on Memorex, and they did work completely fine, but in the long run will give you troubles. Your best bet would be to get some high quality 8X DVD+/-R's, such as Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek G05, Philips, Sony or Maxell.

As far as the time constraint issue, my PS2 is on for 6-8 hours (continuosly) every other day and it is an old V7. That is also with Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R's....and only TY!!

ok, your posts make lots of sense now, so I have v13 which has the same laser part nomber as v14.

I am so worried because this is my second PS2, the first one which I returned, stopped playing DVD's at all, only CD's were possible. So, I exchanged it with a new one that I have now, and I don't want to repeat the same mistakes.

The problem was I think my son nocked the laser by trying to insert a game, he is 3 yrs.

I was planning on moving this PS in my car, and buy a 8.5v car adapter for him to play in the car. Now I am very skiptical about doing that. It seems that bumps and vibration could easily nock the laser.

What do you think?

Thanks a lot

I'd agree. Taking it down the road might be more work than help (for the kid). I've done it a couple times, but have also had to re-align the laser when I got home.

Oh, by the way, how do you align the laser? the only document that I saw several times here is for an older model PS.

Is there a clear one for the slim PS2 v13?
I hope it doesn't envolve taking the PS apart as that post showed.

If I have an original DVD game would I still worry about alignment or is it only with copies? this must be a PS problem, why wouldn't my DVD player in the car need alignment!!

Thanks

The general speed for burning PS2 games is 4x.

However, I had trouble with 1 media at 4x.

Imation DVD+R 8x(CMC mag)
Loading is very slow, movies are choppy.

I solved it by burning the same media at 8x.

I now use Ricoh(2.4x), Taiyo Yuden(2.4x) and some cheap MCCs(4x).

Bottomline is, just try to burn at the minimum speed which your console can read at, which is usually 2.4-4x for newer consoles.

Some ps2 can read dvds burnt at 2.4x but some dont, maybe its due to the laser wearing out.
