I just recently bought a 50 pack of "Maxell DVD-R 8X" (RitekG05). I have wasted about 7 discs trying to burn King Kong and finally had enough.
On a whim, I decided to try an "Imation DVD+R 8X" (I know, CMAG) and the movie burned flawlessly!!! I'm scratching my head wondering if I obtained a bad batch of Riteks.

Anyone heard of bad batches, or can someone please shed some light here? Thanks.

there are a # of reasons why one disk plays or records better than another disk. First off it could be that your firmware is not up to date! Second, notice you used DVD+Rs(imation) and DVD-Rs (maxell), there is a differance and you're not comparing apples to apples!

Physically there is a difference between a DVD-R disc and a DVD+R disc that is made during the production process. During the production of a DVD-R disc the lead-in is pre-embossed (pre-written). This overwrites parts of the DVD that contains information about the disc. E.g. the CSS key (part of the copy protection) is in this part on commercial movie discs (This is why you can?t make a 1:1 copy of a DVD). But in this space there is also room reserved for the so called ?booktype? field.

Changing the booktype field

This booktype field identifies the disc as either a DVD-ROM, DVD+R(W) or a DVD-R(W) disc and is for a big part responsible for the compatibility. Because this setting is overwritten during the DVD-R production process it can?t be modified afterwards, the laser of your DVD recorder simply can?t write to that part of the disc. During the production of DVD+R discs the space is untouched. Still CSS keys can?t be written to DVD+R discs because every DVD recorder and DVD player has a limit in its firmware to write or read to this space. However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder will be able to modify this field by sending a command to the DVD recorder and fool the DVD player.

When the booktype field (bitsetting) is changed to DVD-ROM then DVD players are fooled and will think the user has put in a DVD-ROM disc instead of a DVD+R disc and will read it accordingly. This results in an increased chance that the player is able to read the disc and that?s why the ability to change the booktype field (bitsetting) is essential to a lot of users. Certainly owners of a DVD player that requires this field to be set to DVD-ROM, in order to work properly, will prefer a DVD recorder that supports setting the booktype field.
Check out this link:
http://www.k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

so there is or may be a compatibility issue with your drive using the DVD-Rs to record on. Now if you tried the Maxell, DVD+Rs then I would have some other concerns.

RitekG05 disks are good! the CMC MAG disks (imation) are not such a good brand but will record...... how long they last is another question! I use only Taiyo Yuden.... they are the best for me and are top notch disks. They even feel better in your hand than the others! Thicker. Better made. Now if you said you used Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Sony, or Maxell DVD+Rs then I would be concerned.

OK. I did'nt know there was a difference like that in + and - discs. Looks like I cannot utilize these discs because I am having a problem with them.

It's kind of wierd though because I was having a problem with the movie "Walk The Line" when I was using the "Imation DVD+R 8X" and when I went to Wally World and bought a 3 pack (yes 3-pack) of "Maxell DVD-R 4X" (I believe RitekG04?) the problem went away. The problems were skipping and freezing.

So I guess I would be better off sticking to DVD+R's? By the way, yes my firmware was just updated about 2 days ago thanks to another member on this forum. Thanks for your help, there are a lot of knowledgeable people here and without them I would certainly be lost.

I used to use Imation myself till I smartend up and start getting TY's off the internet. I can get them for $10 more then what I would pay for imations at wal-mart. Imations suck and are very unpreditible. They would work on 1 DVD player fine but would skip and freeze on my other 2 DVD players. I then started using the TY's and they play perfect on all players with no trouble. So save the agrivation and get better quility media.

I'm seeing more and more negative posts with the Ritek-G05 MID code.Maxell does use a lot of this media on the dash 8x. That's why I refer peeps to the Japanese spindles of Maxell. The jap spindles are made by hitachi, and should be very high quality media. Those dash 8x japanese maxells will code as Mxl-rg03. Even have the same gold top as the ritek g05 maxells.

Movies27 is one of the few members that really likes Ritek-G05 maxells. I love the +8x maxells that code as Ritek-R03.These are their taiwanese spindles. Now the +8x japanese maxells code as Maxell-002-00 and are made by hitachi. Very sweet media.

If I want Ritek-r03 media,I can get it a lot cheaper on the Office Depot +8x media if it is still around. 20-25 cents each during OD sales.

What's the brand name and model# of your drive?

Maxell 4x media:

Dash 4x-taiwanese: Ritek-g04
Dash 4x-Japanese- Mxl-rg02
Dash 4x-Japanese- Ty-g01
Dash 4x-Taiwanese- cmags

Plus 4x- Ricohjpn-01: some pretty good stuff.

Notice the dash 4x yellow tops have 4 different manufacturers. Their dash 8x has 3. Mxl-rg03/Ritek-g05/and some cmags.

Maxell Plus 8x has 2: Maxell-002-00 and Ritek-R03.Both are very good!

My drive is a Dynex dual layer burner. The model # is DX-DVDRW16.

I think I got it for like $89.95 before the rebate of like $40.00 about a year or so ago. It's been good this whole time burning flawlessly up until King Kong, but when I switched over to the +R Imation to see if it was a media problem......whaaala. It worked perfectly on that CMC media.

That's why I was wondering if it was the discs or a compatability problem with my drive and the -R Maxells you know?

Some drives favor dash, and others favor plus.

Dynex? Never really hear much about those drives.

I also like the plus format for booktyping purposes with my benqs.Seems like the overall media quality is better than the dash-going by my success rate for all 4 benqs. A couple other dvd-rw drives I have,it's the opposite.

Give those Maxell +8x a shot. Lots of good media. Japanese spindles/case packs will yield hitachi, and the taiwanese will yield ritek-r03 which for me,performs as well as all my taiyo yuden/hitachi/and verbatim media. Very good stuff.

I can also burn cmags, but stand alone players will pick out the lower quality defects with pixellation/freezing/skipping/and no discs. Newer players should play them ok,older-drives with wear and tear will show these quality issues during playback.

I also look at like: Why pay $15 a 50 pk for TDK/HP/Memosux/Imation cmags when you can get Sony/Fuji tys/Maxell hitachi/or verbatim mitsubishi for that same price?

All depends on the problems. If your burn fails during the leadin phase of the burn, then firmware issue.Look at the bottom of disc for any actual burn.

There's bad batches of media everywhere. Even taiyo yuden and verbatim. There's also fake media out there. It's a dvd world of uncertainty. Best bet is go with the format that performs the best, and stick with that format and the MID code for that media. Maxell, like most brand names of media use many different manufacturers.Media quality will vary between those manufacturers.Another reason why Genuine taiyo yuden and verbatim are recommended.

Compatability is usually the stand alone players. They are the players that decide which format/how fast to burn/and even which MID codes they will play. If you stand alone player/s have no problem with plus format, then stick with it.If you get a no disc error, then that player may prefer your dash backup.

Burn coasters: Usually burner quality/media quality/and firmware.

Thanks for all the help. I think I'm going to stick with the +R then because I've noticed less problems. I get paid tomorrow so I'll be looking for deals on Verbatim or Sony then.

You know what else is wierd? I just identified a few of my "Memorex" discs that I have movies burned onto (The Shining, The Thing to name a couple) and they come up as Ritek! I guess you're right about them using different manufacturers.

Someone at work gave me 4 memorex dvd+8x that were in jewel cases. These coded as Ritek-R03. These are pretty good discs, but the odds of getting cmags is greater. Very hard to tell which memorex are the decent ones, and which ones are cmags. That's why I don't buy memosux.

I buy taiyo yuden and verbatim for the same 30 cents apiece price, locally when they go on sale.

4x speed maxells, which are extict, were made by: Ritek/Hitachi/Taiyo yuden/and cmags in that order of chance of getting which one. Highest chance was riteks, and ty and cmags were the rarest. All these were the same yellowtops in the dash format. Plus 4x: I've burned several hundred from every different quantity batch they have and always got Ricohjpn-01.These were all silver, along with a slight blue in some of them.

8x speed: Both formats made by Ritek and Hitachi. No taiyo yuden, but once again-a few cmags from their dash 8x. All these dash's are gold Tops.

Plus 8x: Ritek-r03 and Maxell-002-00 that are hitachi. Riteks are their majority, with the hitachi's getting harder to find. The only thing I complain about the maxell +8x is the cost. Usually 30 cents each when on sale. Hitachi for 30 cents,no problemo.
Ritek-R03 for 30 cents: Way too much. I'd get the Office Depot +8x when they went on sale for 20-25 cents each. The exact same Ritek-R03 MID code on every one of the Office Depot +8x. Their OD +16x are Ricohjpn-r03 and not too shabby.

Keep an eye on maxell 16x media. Pretty good chance of Ricohs on the plus 16x,but haven't seen any yet.

Maxell 8x full hub inkjet printables same way. Hitachi on the japanese spindles, and cmags on their taiwanese full hubs. Use caution with Maxell full hubs.Walmart and Office Depot carry these and all those spindles are mixed in with each other. They look identical, except for country of origin. The taiwanese usually have a white sticker that says Made in Taiwan. The made in Japan hitachi will be on the shrink wrapper itself.

Bigtoxy69: I've got several spindles of Imation full hub inkjet printable cd-r media. Not too bad. I get them at Dollar General-which is a dollar store. Usually 30 pks for $6. It's weird, I have 3 of those dollar general stores in my town. 2 of them has $8 tagged on them, and the other is $6

wow i cant believe some1 had a problem with a maxell RitekG05 disc...i've burned oh ummm like only maybe a few hundred of those with no coasters...but those days are gone now as they are switching over to maxell 16x dvd-r:(....@saugmon..i would like to get the Maxell 8x DVD+R but my sony burners will only write at1x,2x and 2.4x with any DVD+R disc & i only burn my movies at 4x...on another note i hope they don't start only selling maxell 16x DVD+R too...

You and gurnard are some of the few members that have excellent results with Ritek-G05. I've seen a slew of negative posts about them. Probably due to their burner's model#. I've burned a few spindles, but stand alone compatability was the only negative thing about dash media.

Maxell sales are getting very rare.I haven't seen any 16x speed maxells yet. My local walmart has the 8x still, and I do like the full hub printable maxell-002-00. But those same +8x maxell full hubs are made in taiwan too. Most likely cmags?

Since 16x speed media is taking over: Give the Verbatim a shot. The +16x MCC-004 perform better at 8x and 12x for me. Fewer errors at 12x,compared to the 4x tests. I can't burn these at 2.4x. Too many crc errors. I got some dash 16x verbs that I have to test out and see if they perform better at the faster burn speed.. I can't burn slow anymore.

I used Datasafe(RitekG04) for years and they were great, very few problems. They were not available when GO5 discs arrived so I went for Ridisc(RitekG05) and every second disc(or more) was a Coaster, terrible discs. However I have since used Traxdata(RitekG05) and they are great. I suspect the Ridisc discs were of a lower grade RitekG05 dye and therin lies the problems. So if you can't be sure you are getting Grade A RitekG05 I would stay clear.
