Ok for starters, i have the slim PS2. Its about 1 year old, not sure where that would put it version wise.
Questions are,

Ive heard they require laser voltage mods or they burn up?
Is this a problem if you never run anything besides real PS2 disks
that are kept in pristine condition?
I am assuming the laser ramps up voltage when its having trouble reading?

I know the original larger PS2 had a hard drive option, and the game final fantasy online required it to be played.
Do any new games use the hard drive feature, or was it dropped from all games? (which makes sense since the HDD was dropped from the case)
If no more games make any use of it and FF online is probably no longer, then there isnt much need to ask about a modded case and HDD.

Since i dont run backup discs or foriegn discs, and cant fathom running linux on a PS2 (its funner on my 2 linux pc's) is there any advantage or improvement i would get from any of the mod chips?
Quite a few people keep telling me "Oh you need to get a mod chip, you need a mod chip"
Im not seeing exactly what id be gaining?

And a last stupid question,
What the heck are the PS2 ports for?
LAN card is built in, i dont think it has a high speed USB controller
so data transfer isnt it, too slow.
Keyboard and or mouse?
Since i realy only play d&d kind of adventure games, and there are relatively few of those, maybe there is some kind of controllers i missed?
I thought all the wheels and stuff use the joystick ports?

if you don't plan to use backup disks or run home brew applications you have no need what so ever for a chip and it would be a waste of $$$ for you to get one installed.

the V12 (the first slim) is the only slim that requires a laser fix and yes even with original games it's possible to burn out a laser on them.

the USB ports are most commonly used for online games that support a headset, there are other uses like a USB keyboard to type in codes on cheat devices and i use mine quite often to transfer files via a USB flash drive.

Ok will check that against my model number.

Someone gave me final fantasy online
but if i understand correctly, this will only play on the fat PS2 with hdd option, correct?

Was this the only game made that way?

use a DMS4 chip, it has auto patching so the console believes the harddrive is an official Sony.

No i meant was that the only game that required a hard drive?
Its the only one ive ever seen that says hard drive required.

Im guessing its probably a dead game anyways and not worth the bother

the reason it's the only one is the timing of it's release and the slim console which didn't have a means of installing a HD and game developers quickly seen that chips with the Auto-ATAD patching made it even easier for piracy to take place.
