Man, I'm always learning. Picked up a couple of Sony 16x DVD-r 50's at Staples figuring the word is, they are TY.
Then I read it's only the ones packed with the octagonal felt washers that are TY. Well I got one octo and one round but both packages clearly say "Fabrique in Japan"....so what are these that are not TY?
BTW, I am using them in my Tosh RDXS52. I was warned by Toshiba customer support that 16x blanks would not be reliable for my "older" model but after inquiring here,I took a chance anyway. I've done 5 for 5 (from the round washered "non TY?" pack) successful burns with these 16x's and no indication of trouble and they play fine on my JVC player.

If they're not made by Taiyo then they are more than likely made by Sony themselves - good though (not as great as Taiyo imo).
Id them thru a program like this one to find the manufacturer:

Just because they lack the octagonal washer doesn't mean that they're not Taiyo Yuden ...

LOL
exitor, do NOT depend on the whole "spacer" theory to obtain TYs...it's only been recently that people have NOTICED (key word here is NOTICED) that an easier way to find the TYs under the Sony brand have been to look out for the octagonal spacers on top~ :)
this does NOT always hold true as you probably have noticed by now...i have right here in front of me Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ with the white ROUND spacer...these are the YUDEN000T02s and definitely genuine Taiyo Yudens...simple example of WHY u should not rely on the "spacer" method of finding TYs...LOL

And just because their SONY (MIT) Does not make them inferior to TY disc. I speak from experience (Over 800 SONY -R 8x disc all purchased on sale). I wish someone would explain this myth or popular belief. It seems like it's something against SONY (preference wise). Which I understand with Arccoss encryption and all, But in my experience SONY does not make cheap or poor quality DVD -R media of anykind regardless of where they're maunufactured. Personally the TY +R SONY have been crap for me freezing and skipping frequent bad batches, I now totally avoid them in SONY brand.
I would later read that TY makes different grades of disc which may explain this. My PC is less that 2yrs old and was built from the manufacture to better than average spec (OEM 16x 8.5 DL OD/OEM 3.2GHTZ processor OEM/ 200gig HD/OEM 1gig of RAM. So Im not using cheap or old PC equipment. The other non-truth I read recently about the octo spacer and TY with SONY which is totally false, Though the round edge 50pk spindle cases have been a dead give away for TY or JAPAN made spindles though this is not always true either.
I just wish someone would make an unbias explaination of why it's popular thinking to say MIJ SONY is Better MIT SONY when outside of the spindle this can't even be determined always.:p "Please Explain".:P

I can tell the difference between a MIT and a MIJ Sony disc holding one in each hand with my eyes closed ... My BenQ loves the MIJ while my set top recorders (LiteOn) prefer the MIT ...

Hmmmmm? Well I have 2 SONY internal (Liteon) and a SONY 810-DRXUL external (BenQ). They both burn to Either Verbatim or SONY DVD disc of anykind. The more I hear theres a difference the more I think it's just exagerated rumor or ill perception. I recently purchased spindles from MIT and MIJ and they code out the same. The paper label says they're different though? Some have large print, some have small print. Either print is found on both MIT and MIJ made disc?

Thanks for the info.
It was my first venture into 16x blanks to use on my Toshiba so I wanted to get good disks. The Sony's were on sale and I heard that all Sony MIJ were T-Y. Maybe that's not true but whatever these MIJ Sony's are, they seem to work fine. I'm just curious to know what they could be if they are MIJ but not T-Y.

The spacer theory is quite accurate, since it was only intended to allow for the identification of -R media, not +R. Somewhere along the way, amateurs got ahold of the theory, and this led to confusion.
I repeat, the octagonal spacer as a way of identifying TY disks is only applicable to the Sony -R media. This is as it always has been. Some idiots made the wrong assumption that the spacer theory was meant to also apply to the +R disks. It does not, and this was NEVER the intention.
