Hello all:

I'll start in with this, first post here, although I have been reading on this forum for quite some time, and have been burning / copying DVD's for years, paid $300 for my first 2.4x burner and have been going at it ever since. In a nutshell, I've copied around 1000 movies, so I'm not exactly a newb at this.

But alas, for the last couple weeks I have been having some HUGE problems with all movies that I have copied. About 50% of them will just plain not load, the other 50% of them will play about 10 - 20 minutes into the film and then begin to chop up badly, eventually locking up the DVD player. I have tried these movies in four different DVD players, a newer JVC, an older JVC, XBox, and PS2. Same trouble on all of them. However they play fine on the computer that burned them, and the video files on the hard drive also play fine.

I have been using TDK media for a while now without any problems, but I have also tried HP blanks. Having the problem with both. Also have tried this on two different computers, same problems.

Running AnyDVD 5.8.3.1 in the background, using Shrink to rip / encode, and Nero 6.6 to burn. I have also tried using Roxio to burn, same problems. Also have tried using DVDFab to rip and DVD Decrypter.

Movies I burned in the past still play just fine on all of these players. All the movies I have ever burned have been on +R media, these included, and I have never had any issues with +R media.

The ones I have been fighting with recently are 40 year old virign, southpark season 7, cinderella man, lord of war, history of violence, mr and mrs smith, and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind just to name a few.

I'm at a complete loss here. About to buy a new burner and dvd player if nothing else presents itself.

Thank you all for the help

~Nem

hello,

maybe you need to buy some proper disks like verbatims or taiyo yudens

not a big fan of TDK to be honest, and those HP disks are even worse

try booktyping a disk to DVD-ROM (if you burner allows this,as not all of them do),this might help

cheers!!

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

also Roxio interferes with Nero, but we'll see that in the logfile. I concur with ps2hacka about the TDK and HP discs..

Well I ran DVD Identifier on the HP and the TDK media, both returned the exact same thing

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:CMC MAG-M01-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [DVD+R]
Manufacturer Name : [CMC Magnetics Corp.]
Manufacturer ID : [CMC MAG]
Media Type ID : [M01]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x , 6x-16x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V4.3.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Booted into OSX86 and used Toast 6 to burn with the same problem. I was able to use an older DL I had laying around and it burned / played with no problems. I am suspecting now that it is just a media issue with my burners. I already flashed the latest firmware into the drive. I'm going to attempt to return these 200 TDK dvd's to Costco and just order some 8x Taiyo Yuden's from supermediacenter.com

Here is the last entry from what I can tell in the Nero history log

The problem is that NONE of these will play in ANY DVD player that I have found. As far is it burning at 15x, thats a joke, it took longer to burn that at 16x then it does when i set them to 8x. And according to the Device Manager, the drive is using DMA. i've had it revert to PIO before and that was a noticeable hit in performance.

All I can think of is that for some reason my burner does not care for the CMC M01 media.

Nero Version: 6.6.0.15
- not too bad, latest version is 6.6.0.18 (6.6.1.4 doesn't count as it's crap and buggy). but your burner is recognised so no need to update Nero unless you want to
Quote:
Recorder: <DVDRW DRW-3S163> Version: BSG5
- well that's certainly some obscure burner, well as far as my googling goes anyway. not yet sure if the firmware's current, however it's certainly recognising those *cough* CMC *cough* discs there..

- DMA needs to be ON; what ppl normally do to get DMA on is to ditch the Nvidia drivers and install the standard Microsoft ones..try following this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

- 4465MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space

- wow what's the hurry, you got no DMA set to ON, you're torturing those CMC's, they do deserve it mind. get DMA sorted and try 8x, maybe even 4x
