@Negritude,

Why do I still use 4X, 8X and 16X media? 'cuz it works! I have a 16x DL burner and a DVD-R which burn anything including 16X media. I just happen to like the 8X TYG02 disks and the 4X TYG01 disks. Both burn quite well at their maximum speed, and I have burned several TYG03 at 16X with no problems, so in my book speed is not the issue, my complaint is that it is getting harder to find MIJ media.

@arniebear, just picked up a case of the DL's from Best Buy. I like the 20 pk. and I also ordered 100 of those TY's from supermediastore..ya, know those Sony's and FuJi's (MIJ) 1-8x are scarce, yet found the Sony's at the Wal-mart down the street...picked up two 50 pks. code as TY's 02. I love the Verb DL's...flawless. Have a good one.

@MovieDud

Am out to my BB tomorrow for those DL's. Sort of hate to go there because I always end up buying more than I went for. Am yearning for a Plex 750UF but BB wants 165.00 for it and I can get it from the Plex site for 25.00 less. Will have to wear a blindfold when I go in the store. You have a good week, my friend.

@arniebear, oh, you speak the very words I try (Not to successful!) to go in and out with purchasing only what I intended. Good luck! I only grabbed one pk, I already had 10 from the last batch so I should be o.k. for a while, hey, would you and others consider Plextor the cadillac of the burners? I have internal Nec and external Sony which I have enjoyed quite well over the past year. Just wondering what your take is on the subject. Hey, have a good week my friend and good luck on the burner.

Moviedude , YES, Plextor is the best drive on the market. the PX716A has been rated the best drive several years in a row now(per my sig)

Arine that PX-760A is running 105.00 at newegg and 119.00 on Plextor wedsite it less sexpensive than the PX-716A wonder whats up with that

Probably made by BenQ which would explain the low price. Still a good drive no matter.

@aabbccdd

Here is the new drive at Plex site and this one is a Plex, the difference with the new on I believe is that you only have a 2meg buffer vs. 8 meg in the 716a. Also, the case on this one is not anywhere near the 716a case which has a fan in it. It is 139.00 from them, the 740UF is available from NewEgg at 109.00 with a mail in rebate for 20.00 bringing it down to 89.00. Not bad for a BenQ drive and the one I had worked very well.

@MovieDud

Lol, I am going to take my wife with me, that will stop me from buying:)

even though i've now sworn my allegiance to Benq drives (1640 and 1650 now), i will have to chime in and say that the Plextor PX-716A IS what you call the "cadillac" of dvd burners~ :)

the reason for this is the excellent build quality as well as the huge 8mb buffer that makes it superior to all the other drives in the market today~ :)

while i'm very much content and thoroughly pleased with my Benqs and my Pioneer dvr-109 (i'm a real big fan of Pioneer drives too, just have to have the "know-how" of making them booktype capable even though officially they are not...they are fast, reliable and did i mention fast? LOL) :)

there are other very good options by Liteon, NEC, among others that are a good value for the money, i think the Plextor PX-716A is a PRICEY burner to have, but you get what you pay for... i don't have one personally, but my close friend SWeARS by Plextor drives and he's had his PX-716A since it was released in the U.S. long time ago...still kickin' like a champ today..hence, my opinion of that particular Plextor :)

as far as the rebadged benqs, save your money and buy the ORIGINAL Benqs rather than pay extra for the "plextor" or "sony" name on the bezel/retail box...you'd probably be doing urself a favor anyways when you decide to "cross-flash" your plextor or sony to the genuine rebadged model of Benq in the future...benq's firmware is regularly updated to accomodate new media, this is not to say Plextor and Sony don't update, just not as frequently as they focus MORE on their newer models being released than catering to the "older" models that "didn't sell as well as expected in the stores" :)

p.s. Sony is ESPECIALLY bad/guilty of this when it comes to their OEM models, like they totally forget about them and are caught asking themselves, "we had that model produced? when was this? did i not get the memo on it?" LOL

Hiya doc, I agree with your friend, I have both the internal and external 716a and it is primo. I know aabbccdd will also agree. Just looking at the Plex 750 because I wanted another external but am not willing to pay for another 716 and BenQ 1640's are not easy to find so I may just take advantage of the Plex 740UF price but got to get it by the wife, lol :)

Me too, I love them. They are perfect little happy campers, especially if you feed them the good media. They love Taiyo Yudens best and the Verbs, never a problem. They get a little finicky on the MIT Sony -R, the power record will sometimes slow a burn down on these disks, must see something it does not like. But they are really made for +R media, any they just whiz along then.

hello guys,
so if the money is not a problem, would you guys purchase
a new px760-a or the old px716. i mean the new px760a seems to
be awesome deal at 99 plus shipping in newegg.com. i am trying to decide which one to buy. the only plextor dvd burner i have is the pz740uf which is not even a real plextor. so i really want to buy a plextor because all the TY's and Verbatims i have stocked up over past months. All feedbacks are welcome.

thanks

Yujenh , i would def. go with the PX-716A ,its been rated the best drive on the market several years in a row ,iam sure the PX-760A 18x is a great drive but its brand new and there may be bugs to work out of it being it has only one firmware verison at this time

If you're going to spend $100+ on a burner, I'd recommend the 716 as opposed to the 760 .. the 760 ONLY has a 2MB buffer and if I spend that kind of cash on a burner, I'd expect a 8MB buffer like the 716's ...

Not to be a naysayer but even burning a DVD at 2X requires 22 Mbps so the 6MB difference in buffers will only equate to a fraction of a second. Most apps nowadays have a software buffer which is much more effecient than any drive-based buffer :)

Neph .. you're preachin' to the choir here .. I'm a BenQ fan .. can't see spending $100 on a burner .. 2MB buffer works great burnin' at the speed of light on my BenQs ...
