@Nephilim & others: True, we're talking a fraction of a second, but then again, when we're talking computers operating at incredible transfer rates, the type of transfers and the speed at which they occur does matter, even if it is happening in a fraction of a second. Now I'm no expert, and I'd never try to pass myself off as one, but it's always been my understanding that memory chips are quite a bit faster at transmitting data than hard drives (or in our example, the 8MB buffer is a lot faster than the software buffer of various applications, in my case, Nero). So, there probably is a valid argument that an 8MB buffer will be better at handling data transfers to various media than a 2MB buffer in those rare occasions when something hiccups on the hard drive and there is a potential gap in the data stream. How often things like this occur when you're using the best stuff out there (great 2MB buffer drives, fantastic media, and intelligent computing practices while burning) is anyone's guess.

All that being said, I still don't own a Plextor, even though I consider them the best drives out there. It's my guess that the 8MB buffer is one of those features you hope you never need, but is great to have if you ever do. ;) Optical burner insurance, if you will. :D

I've been hearing outstanding things about BenQ's. As a matter of fact I was cruising newegg the other day and damn near ordered a DW1655. My Plextor PX-708A is still cranking out perfect copies but I've been in the mood for some "strange" lately ;P

Here's a question for you all - is it pronounced "benk" or ben kyoo"? I always say the former and my brother always says the latter.

delateur,

As I understand it the software buffers store the data in system memory which is quite fast and capable of holding much more than a fraction of a second's worth of data thusly being able to sustain the data flow in a more realistic and useful manner.

All said and done the 8MB buffer is more of a marketing gimmik than anything :)

@Nephilim: Hey, that's some great info that I wasn't aware of. I did not realize the software buffer was created in system memory, although that WOULD make more sense, as you'd want to store it in the place that has the best transfer rates. I had always assumed it was the hard drive since the buffer filled up so slowly, but if you say it's system RAM, I'll take your word for it. Thanks for setting me straight. :) If that's the case, then yes, 8MB is probably just a gimmick, unless we're talking some blazing fast RAM that far outstrips system RAM (which I kind of doubt...).

As for BenQs, I'd say it's time to get a smidge closer than damn near, pull out some plastic, and order one of those DW1655s! I absolutely LOVE mine, and you can always keep your Plextor for ripping purposes. ;)

I use my Plextor for burning CDs .. my BenQs do DVDs better but they're kinda weak on the CD side of things ...

@catfreak: Not so hot on CD burning, eh? That's good to know. I don't burn many CDs, but it sounds like I best stick with my Lite-On.
