I've got 'band of brothers' - a six disk set which I dearly love and its getting in terribly bad shape so I'm anxious to get it backed up.
But nothing seems to work. Shrink, dvd decrypt, dvdfab and others I think I've tried.
I remember someone somewhere saying that for a particular piece of software XP was know to create hassles, 'stick with win2k'.
Is XP known as a problem platform? Would I be better off,have a better chance of success, if I stayed with win2K ?
Also, am I trying too hard? It is not like copying CD's, is it? With them the easiest thing is copy everything. With DVD 'everything' is the whole problem, as I understand it, because it is too big.
Well considering the format of this disk set - every episode preceded by the same tedious intro - I really don't need everything. I just want the episode's film, that's all.
Is there an easier way if one only wants the film?
And if we're prepared to drop the quality to SVCD (which I am if there's NO OTHER WAY :( )?

I don't think xp is the problem here - sounds more like the shape the originals are in. What errors or problems are your having? I'm thinking crc/read errors. Depending on the shape these discs are in - if they're too bad they may beyond ripping them.
Try cleaning them off. Do you have another drive you can try?

I've asked in that other thread if anyone can tell me WHY the prog should take so long with a scratched disk. What is it doing? A programmed 'time out' every time it finds it has lost its way (found a scratch)? Even a time out would require some cycles wouldn't it?
It has now been running from 10a.m yesterday to 6.25a.m. today. 20 hours. I've heard of other guys having similar probs. Scratched disks the problem, okay - but intriguing to speculate what exactly is the prog doing? Why not stop and report a termination if it lost - or use 100% cpu cycles looking for a way out if it is going to retry?
I'm sorry. I shouldn't be asking here, should I? There's forums dedicated to DVD Decrypter. I'll chase it up there.

You can ask here - no forum for DVD Decrypter but there is one for DVD Ripping.
Why DVD Fab just hangs - can't answer that one - could just be a fault in the program - like you said there's been several members here that have reported it just hanging like that when it hits the bad spots on the disc.
Agree it should give an error like Shrink or Decrypter - would make it a bit easier!
If your still trying I would stop. Try to buff out those scratches - may help.

The thing is not 'hanging' - that'd be understandable. The thing is that it is still working. It hangs - totally stopped as far as %cpu cycles are concerned as reported by task manager - but it has NOT stopped. Because somehow it comes back to life (never when I'm watching) and does more work. The blue line gets longer, more files appear in the dir.
I find it very intriguing. I'll ask. See if we can find a programming guru or a hacker who's looked at the code or is familiar with this kind of behaviour.
'buff the disk' - with what? I've heard you should use jeweller's rouge, whatever that is.
For buffing out the disc I've heard of people using toothpaste, car polish, dvd scratch repair kits etc. How well they work I guess depends on how bad the disc is.
Luckily none of mine are that bad where a lens cleaning clothe can't straightened out. Anything you use should be non abrasive and not done in a circular motion.
