To understand the following you must have basic knowledge of to backup xbox games...

You know when you put a xbox game onto the xbox's hdd, then you have to transfer the game file(s) over to the comp then use a program to turn it into iso (IsoX Creator, I think) then you can burn it and it will work....if you do not turn it into an iso and burn it, it will not work right?

Well similarly (do not know if this is a real word) for the psp, when you put a UMD onto the memory stick pro duo, you cannot play it right?.. until u use umdgen to turn it into an iso or image (or whatever its called) right?

My whole point is this...WILL IT WORK IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT WAS "DUMPED" TO THE MEMORY STICK OR DO YOU HAVE TO TRANSFER IT TO COMP THEN TURN IT INTO ISO OR IMAGE AND TRANSFER IT BACK TO MEM STICK SO THAT THE BACKUP CAN BE PLAYED?..

If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

You can use imediately if it doesn't need any patch or special need to boot it, but if it is split iso, than it wont work, also with xbox games, you can just put in dvd drive and use DVD Decrypter, same with PS2.

PS2 Slimline + Swap Magic + Fan
PS3 60gb Version 1.90
PSP 3.52 M33 EUR Black Version + Logitech Hard Case + Logitech 3 Sound Speakers + 2gb Sony Memory Stick
Nintendo Wii + 3 Wii&Nunchuck Controllers
NDS Original + M3 Simply + 1gb Kingston MicroSD
NDS Lite + M3 Simply + 2gb Sandisk MicroSD

So then, what does UMDGen do? And is there any program that plays backups of psp games but that does not have a dump function (in other words, it cannot transfer UMD's onto the mem stick using the psp of course but it can by lets say dling the games and putting the on the mem stick)

depends on the size of the umd, but most of the time, no you cant just dump a game and play it right then and there.
you were on the right track tho,
your game may be split into 3 parts,
you rejoin them with umdgen or WinRAR and then you have a playable iso.

umdgen has many functions.
rebuilding isos, taking apart isos, extracting certain parts of isos, reducing overall size etc.

here is a short tute on dumping that should help

s3a:
UMD gen doesnt do anything except put rebuild ISO files eg when you extract an ISO you will get a folder PSP_GAME and a file UMD_DATA.bin
UMDgen is used to put those files back together to become the playable iso.

As for the loaders your after, i recommend UMD emulator for started, but if they backup doesnt work you may need to use MPHgameloader, in conjunction with the umd emulator.

thx, everyone but I still have one other question and it is not about UMDGen, it is about some "GTA Loader" I dled that, apparently it is to load a saved game or something of gta lcs up to version 2.50 (which is what I have, I hope to be able to use programs such as UMD emulator in the future) to play roms and stuff (I do not know about psp backups but I am not sure) but I do not have GTA LCS so, can I do that with another game such as NBA Live '06?

On 2.5 you wont be able to use umd emulator or any other iso loader, yet.
The only thing you can do is homebrew via the GTA exploit, only GTA no other UMD can be used.
Because your on 2.01+ You wont be able to load the backup isos.

Heres some stuff you can do with the 2.01+
