Hey guys I'm having a weird problem with some backed up games. The majority of my backed up games work perfectly, but certain games like Burnout Revenge and Gran Turismo 4 boot up but the controllers stop working. Anybody have any idea what's wrong?
Oh and I'm running a version 4 ps2 with a messiah 2 modchip.

What controller are you using? Some games require that the controller is the official PS2 dualshock 2 controller.

Yeah I'm using the official SONY controllers so that shouldn't be a problem. The wiring on the modchip doesnt seem to be the problem since most of the other games are working. Media shouldn't be a problem since the game boots up and after a while plays the intro movies. The only little oddity is the fact that I'm playing without a memory card right now, but I don't see how that could cause a problem. I backread 30+ pages and searched the forums and I seem to be the only with this problem. Strange. So now I'm thinking it's something really stupid like the controllers aren't plugged in (they are). But any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You may be having a problem with your controller ports. Does the controller do this with originals?

That's a good question, I haven't tried. I'm going to go pickup a new copy of GT 4 and check it out. If the controllers do work I'm guessing it's a problem with the backup, but if it doesn't work it's a problem with my system... and then this thread wouldn't really belong here. So I guess I'll go pick up GT4 first chance I get. It seems strange that a broken controller port would stop working for certain games, but then again I don't really know enough to say. Whatever. Thanks for the help babe, I'll let you know how it goes.

I had a problem sort of like that. When ever I try to play GTA: San Andreas using Action Replay codes the controller wouldent work, but it worked fine without the codes. I think it was because the codes probably only work for the older version of San Andreas. And I have a back up of the greatest hits version.
Oh yeah. I did that with the Sony controller. The Analog button would light up but none of the buttons would work.

Hey guys, it's me again. So I never got around to buying GT4, but i did buy a memory card. When the memory card is in the slot the ps2 boots up, but there's no audio or video. The system works perfectly without the memory card inserted, and here's the weird thing, the controllers started working for the GT4 and the other games that didnt work before. So yeah, it's a hardware problem. Thanks for the feedback guys, I'll be taking this problem to the hardware thread.
