Lots of variables from the PC system resources to the DVD being used as the source. What are the PC specs and what DVD was it?

You need more processor power 3gig minimum and more memory 1gig minimum. Also SATA hard drives sure will not hurt. I promise you this will speed you process up. I had simular specs as yours befor I built my own PC. The time it took me to do the whole process tripled in speed.
Good Luck

Your motherboard either has a K7(700-1000Mhz) or a Thunderbird AMD processor(700-1400Mhz), on a mother board like that you would have the avaliability to upgrade to at least 512MB of memory, more likely 768MB or 1024MB. This would be on a Jabil(Kadoka or Tarbor3)Motherboard or something close to it. Sorry about the industry terms, but I digress, you should be able to sucessfully run a cycle in 40-55 minutes for DL(at about 53-54%), or 30-45 minutes for SL(100%) if you upgraded to 768MB+, and it would also help if you increased your page file (virtual memory-part of your hard drive that the computer uses as memory). If you do not know how to do this, tell me what OS you are using and I can give you the link for the instructions. Hope this helps.

Sorry, didn't see that you specified your MBD, if you are using the ECS M841LR, there are slots for SDRAM memory and DDR RAM, this being the case, in total I believe that specific motherboard can have up to 2Gigs of memory.

@rab48124,
do you mean it takes 90 minutes to rip with DVDD or 90 minutes to rip and shrink?
If 90 minutes to rip, then you probably have a Drive or RAM issue. I would say 512MB of RAM is a nice minimum to have on your PC. Also, never do anything else while ripping and shut down all unnecessary processes and services.
If it takes 90 minutes to rip & Shrink, then that is just about right. That would mean about a 15 minute rip and 75 minutes to transcode. I would still suggest more RAM though. You may or may not see an increase in DVD backup time, but it will improve your overall PC performance. Especially with Windows XP. I think it needs 120MB or RAM just to run idle...
For Windows XP, you will need 256MB of RAM just to run it Idle and not have it lag, so at least double that amount to backup DVDs. If you play games then you will need at least 1Gig of RAM.
You can also upgrade your CPU to an AMD XP 1900. It will cost about $35 to $50 for this CPU. The CPU is what will give you the biggest difference in performance. For instance, if you double the CPU speed, your transcoding (not ripping) time will be cut in half. Just do not forget to also upgrade RAM to at least 512MB as that will minimize all sorts of backup errors.

Your MBD provides 2 DIMMs for PC133 SDRAM, 2 DDR DIMM for DDR266 modules, and memory size is expand up to 2GB.
PC133SDRAM slots are probably 2 512MB slots,
DDR266 slots are probably 2 512MB slots.
DDR266 is commonly refered to as PC2100
Kingston has good prices on value RAM, you can get a 512MB module for about 49.99 on Gateways website
http://accessories.gateway.com/AccessoryStore/PC+Accessories_3164...
and PC133SDRAM is also made by Kingston, but is more expensive.
Gateways best value:

If you are planning only a partial upgrade, and not a full upgrade, I would recommend DDR for two reasons, first it runs at double the speed of PC133, and it is cheaper.
NOTE-I do not push Gateway, I am just familiar with their site as I own an eMachine computer (and they make eMachines as of 1st Qtr 04).

http://www.newegg.com Newegg has a good inventory of RAM and processors. TigerDirect and Mwave are a couple of other online vendors in the US. Those 3 are reputable. There are a bunch of others you can find through bizrate, tomshardware and the like. Just be aware of the return policies on RAM and processors. I'm just assuming you're in the US. If not let us know, someone in your area may know something to help out.
The free version of SiSoftware Sandra will analyze a sytem's components and tell the user what procesor the board will support as well as the memory type and brand in use along with how many slots are in use and how many are available. Check out the information modules. Mainboard will give you most of what you want. A complete system analysis will swamp a person, you'll be surprised by the amount of info if not familiar with Sandra. The modules even include some pointers on improving performance. They're not always right, depends on the system and some of the pointers are "in general".

First of all A BIG thanks to all of you , I'm learning. Two things I looked for the CPU that JaguarGod talked about the AMD XP 1900 and came up empty. Also whiskeyfa talked about increasing your page file (virtual memory-part of your hard drive that the computer uses as memory). How would this be done? I use Xp home.and to brobear, when I went to the site SiSoftware I'm not sure what one to download. Again thanks for helping this not so technical smart person!

Virtual memory kicks in when the RAM isn't sufficient. Sometimes the errors are caused by software. The best bet is to have sufficient RAM. In most instances windows does a good job of handling the virtual memory. Here's a post that has some material on the swap file(s). http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/329393#1933289 In one of my posts I have the instructions for accessing and setting it in XP. I guess I've been lucky, in all the years I've been working with PCs, the OS has managed the virtual files for me.
I noticed some sites don't list the free Lite version of Sandra. Here's one that does. At the bottom of the Lite column you just click the Download link below Details. http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=&location=downandbuy&l...
