Ok, so my friend just gave me a couple Memorex Double Layer DVD+R's with a TV series burned onto them. Rather than it being a standard DVD format (like from copying a commercial DVD), he just put the episodes on AVI format and used the disk as normal storage. The DVD's seemed to work fine at first, however once I get near the middle of all the disks, I start getting an error called "Cyclic Redundancy Check" (this info was given by VirtualDub-my media player just bugged out on me when it hit these spots).

So, there are only a couple causes I can think of for this. Either my friend burned the DVD incorrectly or my DVD rom can not read double layer DVD's (the drive is only several months old though, and I heard double layer became standard capability in 2004). *After inspecting the DVD's and finding them in good condition, and even cleaning them anyway, I am rather confident it's not a phsyical problem with the disks. Because all of the DVD's get the CRC error in the middle, I'm assuming its a problem due to the Double Layered disks.

If anyone knows how I can read these disks or salvage them in their current form, I would really appreciate the help. Also, if I didnt give enough information to go by, I will try my best to answer any additional questions. Thanks in advance.

First do a read scan and see if you're getting bad sectors. Sometimes you get a bad recording that won't record again. I have a disc like that sitting on my desk now.

hehe, sorry but I REALLY am a newbie to this, what kind of program would I use to do this? I have tried DVD Decrypter but that looks like it only works with DVD's in commercial format.

Checking for bad sectors you use Nero's CD DVD Speed utility and select Scandisc. If you don't have something like that, there's the freeware DVDInfoPro that has the scan capability. http://www.dvdinfopro.com/

Cyclic redundancy means your system is timing out due to not being able to read. If you're reading other discs, that means your equipment should be good. That indicates the disc may be at fault. Not all flaws are visible with the disc, so that's whey the scan.
