Hello, I have recently had a problem with my dvd-r's skipping on my magnavox dvd player. I've been using memorex dvd-r. I use dvd decryptor, then shrink, then nero burning rom. I use the lowest speed when I burn them. I have one possible reason. Could my dvd-rom/cd-rom drive need cleaning? But, here's the other thing, when I played one of my backups, it skipped on my magnavox dvd player, but, not on my polaroid portable dvd player. However, it plays fine on my computer also. Could the rom drive still need cleaning, or is there another solution?

Hi,
I know u said "lowest speed" but exxactly is that speed? Also Memorex DVD-R are media coded as CMC MAG. You can search for cmc mag, they are the worst of the worst media, so that in itself could be the problem.

Oh, it's 2.4x. And also, how do I find out if I need a new firmware update? Is there also anyway to get around the CMC MAG?

Change your disk type to Verbatim, Sony or Taiyo Yuden is the only way to get around CMC Mag ;)

You should burn at 4x and not 2.4x.

Check here for your firmware update

Enjoy and good luck!

also, can having spyware on my computer cause skipping?

Do, or do not...There is no try.

i would have to agree with DVDBack23, i used memorex dvds when i first started backing up my movies. i had problems about 2 weeks later when i wanted to watch the backups. they skipped awfully. i even had audio problems. i switched to verbatim, and have not had any trouble since. best investment i ever made.
