Just in case you have any trouble with "Fun with Dick and Jane", just follow the Step By Step Guide by Alkohol. The same proceedure as "The Fog", "The Cave", etc etc.

1. DVDFab 2. VobBlanker 3. Shrink and Burn!

Thanks,
JBurden

Why not just use AnyDVD and the software of choice to transcode and burn?

It seems that there are approx 50% willing to spend a little money on the program, while the other 50% prefer to spend it on other things. If there was not a "Free" alternative, such as what was mentioned above, then Yes, I too would spend money on the program.

Nothing against AnyDVD. It has made a great name for itself. But I just thought I would mention the use of DVDFab+VobBlanker+Shink for those who do not have the extra money, People who are very new to Backing Up DVD's or even the people who only Back Up DVD's once in a while.

But by all means, obviously if you have AnyDVD, you will not encounter any problems with burning issues.

Thanks,
JBurden

So, your perspective was a matter of freeware over retail items and not the merit of the software itself? Just curious where the post was coming from. I think we've all seen DVDFab Decrypter and AnyDVD mentioned countless times here at AD. Guess there's nothing wrong with your mentioning it again. ;) Besides the free Shrink, you could have mentioned the free Rebuilder. It uses the free HC encoder to deliver an excellent output. Then for those DVD releases where compliance problems come up the VobBlanker you mentioned is okay, but then so is the free FixVTS. The burners are free as well, you should have mentioned DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn. While we're talking about DVD Decrypter, it can be used with PgcEdit to create PSL2s that can rip any release so far. Process the output with FixVTS or VobBlanker and it's ready to transcode and burn. Lots of free goodies to be had. I'll just stick to the AnyDVD + DVD Decrypter, process as necessary with FixVTS, encode with Rebuilder + CCE and burn with Nero Express. Works for me. ;) Then lots of different things work for a lot of people. But your point of view is well taken, use the freebies if you don't want to pay for the niceties of retail, you get there either way. ;)

Hey Brobear, just wondering how long it takes You to rip and burn. Man, I was checking out Your specs and You've got a pretty nice setup! Plus using AnyDVD speeds up the process.

If a backup like this is acceptible to you:

you can download the following fix [895KB]:

http://rapidshare.de/files/17789224/D_J_Fix.zip.html

The instructions are included in a readme file.

Usually my times for encoding are longer than a lot due to the software I use. I use Rebuilder with CCE for high quality output. At about 50 to 60 minutes per pass on average, a Rebuilder backup usually takes somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 to 2.5 hours. For something like CloneDVD2, about a half hour. I've not timed it. The system the way it's set up performs better than a 3.8GHz Prescott P4 or an AMD FX 55, that 3.4 Northwood is OC(ed) to 3.6GHz. I've done the bench tests to verify the results. What I'm getting at is speed is determined by the system, but over all time depends on the speed of the sytem and the software in use. For a P4 system running at 2.8GHz you could add nearly another half hour or more to an encode with Rebuilder. Burn time is also a matter of settings. I can easily burn at 8X and overburn good 8X media at 10-12X and the DL burns easily at 6X with no errors. The Plex is faster than the HP, but the HP reads better in some cases. The HP has lightscribe as well, so there's a number of reasons for the 2 burners.

As for the AnyDVD, I use that with DVD Decrypter (slysoft preferred settings) which slows things down a bit. I like using hard drive files and they are needed for some of the apps I use. AnyDVD has it's own ripper, but DVD Decrypter offers more options. Set properly, they work well together.

My next build will be something high performance and should make this one look slow by comparison. I'm thinking something along the lines of a dual core AMD 175 Opteron. That would cut my current RB encode times by about half.

khlockett ,
If your version of AnyDVD is the newest then rip the DVD to HD using the ripper function in AnyDVD. Right click the foxes head on the taskbar and go up to" Rip Video-DVD to Harddisk". The source would be your DVD-Rom where the original is. Destination Setting is the folder you will create on the desktop. Call that folder Rip Movies. Then hit Copy DVD. If this fails then you probably have bad scratches or the DVD is a bad mastering press

If no success, try doing a scan of the disc to see if there are bad sectors. As Car.Mike mentioned, they could be part of the press and not even be visible.

@khlockett,

The file I posted will fix Dick and Jane. Just download and follow the directions in the readme. You will not have extra features, but what's the point of having them, they are on the original not to mention they are very bad. I think there are 6 minutes of Extras total and the rest are previews.

If you get any CRC errors after following the directions, it means that you have a bad press. You should first try a different drive and if that fails, exchange it for a new one.

Also, as the first poster stated, Alcohol's guide will work for this movie or if you have AnyDVD use that.
