Hi,

Normally I use plain printable Riteks for my DVD-R requirements (x4 speed) and have had good use from them, with practically no coasters.

My brohter recently got a x16 speed dvd writer, and i have recommended him to burn at x8 speed using good quality media.

Looking at these forums the Verbatim Tayos look to get the best ratings, but i see that there are cheaper Verbs on the market.

Are the cheaper Verbs ok too? If the cheaper ones work great, then I think he will be happier with spending less.

I understand the Tayo Verbs will be best, but whats your experiences with the standard verbs?

Here are the links i have found:

http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1069

http://svp.co.uk/products-solo.php?pid=1082 (the Tayo ones)

Comments please?

I have been using Taiyo Yuden only and never seen Verbatim made by Taiyo Yuden! Verbatim has been great an now it's even better being made by TY!

for media, i really wish i were in the UK sometimes, those TY Verbs you linked are actually not even available to the general public here in the U.S. (YUDEN000T03s); while i do have 10 pieces of them, i'm on my last 2 since i used 8 already for "testing" :)

anyways, to answer your question, it's difficult to compare what YOU and your burner "prefer" as you are comparing apples to oranges here...meaning, you link the 16x DVD-R Verbatims that are made by MCC, then compare it to 16x DVD+R Verbatims that are made by Taiyo Yuden~ :)

what is the brand and model number of your brother's new x16 speed dvd writer? is it booktype capable? if so, then i would go with the 16x DVD+R format YUDEN000T03s in your 2nd link, if not, then the less expensive Verbatim MCCs would be just fine...

need more info before i can accurately suggest which would work better for ya freeeeky2~ :)

docTY~

wow nice find there freeeky2, i think....

i wonder if i should buy them all up hehe ???.....

as knowing svp they won't do them for long, they don't seem to get the other 'Verbatim TY' (TYG02) anymore. and they seem to be out of MCC004 (16x +R Verbs) too lately.

edit- just noticed svp have more MCC004 in after all, £6 for tubs of 25 still, bargain, i may have to indulge

@freeeky2

just got your PM regarding this, that is an awesome drive your bro got there, as it's a rebadged benq 1640 (which is ONE OF MY best drives~) :)

i talked about it here:

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/254308

however, this was late last year and i have since forgotten about it, obviously some people have cross-flashed it to the benq 1640 and it has given it better features/performance, but i honestly don't know how to do it as i've no experience in flashing Philips/Sony/Plextor retail drives/OEM drives into their actual Benq counterparts~ :)

also, for some ODD reason, i couldn't find the firmware for the Philips dvd8701 after a very quick search on rpc1.org...i did manage to find the model PREVIOUS to yours, which is a rebadged benq 1620, but i can't find YOUR model

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2009

i know that does you no good, but i couldn't find it on philips website either, which i am very unfamiliar with btw~ :)
nor could i find a firmware update on the support.packardbell.com/uk link you provided for your system specs under the download section...

anyways, benq's (which is what you philips dvd8701 is internally) really appreciate the DVD+R format because of it's bitsetting capabilities~ :) so, with your decision between the 2 medias you were inquiring about, i would suggest the Verbatim Taiyo Yuden ones from your 2nd link...the YUDEN000T03 16x DVD+R media~ :)

my only concern at this point is a lack of firmware update on your drive to support the 16x DVD+R (or even the 16x DVD-R from your 1st Verbatim link), i don't know what firmware you currently have on that drive, but if you could tell me, i might be able to look into it further for you to see if there are any more recent versions... :)

bottom line is, assuming your firmware right now can handle either of the 16x rated media you linked, either would be a good choice for quality media...but, from my experience with benq drives (philips chipset), due to it's booktyping abilities, i primarily use DVD+R format almost exclusively for my benq 1640 & 1650s~ but there is nothing wrong w/ using the DVD-R format either, just stating that you could really take full advantage of booktyping DVD+R to dvd-rom with that drive to make it the most compatible with stand alone dvd players~ :)

hope that helps ya a bit, i'll be around if u have more questions...good luck...cheers ova there in the UK...even creaky (our friendly moderator) could help ya in making an informed decision about media since he's in ur neck of the woods and quite familiar with svp's offerings~ :)

docTY~

having re-read the thread properly it looks i got all distracted seeing new Verb TY on sale in UK and forgot to offer you any help :O

anyway, did some googling and found a couple bits of info -

http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=153390 discusses some info of crossflashing to Benq 1640, i've only skimread it for now..

also i haven't yet found any info on the media codes supported either by the Philips 8701 or the Benq 1640 (cdfreaks usually have threads where ppl post the contents of firmware so it's easy to see if a particular drive supports a particular Media code); i then found this, which on the Benq 1640 anyway, can interrogate the firmware to give that same info. it's called MediaCodeSpeedEdit tool and it's here - http://ala42.cdfreaks.com/MCSE it's for tweaking media codes in the firmware however tools like this are great for just nosing in the firmware too. It doesn't appear to support the Philips 8701 but some more googling should reveal the missing answers... got a fair bit on at work so i can't do any more looking just yet.

@kivory666 - thanks for replying to this one, this was the thread i couldn't find from yesterday about the new Verb TY!. i've just ordered a couple Benq 1650's, a steal at £28 each, had to restrain myself from buying more. but i am gonna buy a few hundred of the new Verb TY (YUDEN000T03s), it would be so rude not too hehe

hheheeh...good job creaky~ :) funny how u mentioned you couldn't find the new Verb TYs as i mentioned it earlier and linked ya in my own docTY Taiyo Yuden thread here...

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/43/296925

that svp link was where i was saying it was a good find and then later in the thread catfreak pointed out that i didn't know how to put the "GBP" sign in front of the numerical values/price of the media~ LOL (then blivetNC taught me how to do it) :)

anyways, not to side-track this thread, but it's a good start for freeeky2 to get situated and make an informed decision...googlin' a bit will come in handy too, but i'm pressed for time here at work to do any more REAL searchin right now~ :)

cheers buddy
