My Sony 800 ul/a will allow me to burn Verbs (1-16x), Sony's (1x-8x) at 6x or higher, while my Nec 3540a allows me to burn at 4x as well. My question is is there any quality loss when you burn at 6x rather than 4x? The firmware is up to date on the Sony (FW KY06). Is it possible to change the firmware to allow 4x. I believe my Sony is a rebadged Liteon 1693s. Just need some advice if it is truly necessary to even mess around with this. Appreciate your input. Thanks

I have been burning at 6x quite a bit lately, on DVD+R 8x media, and I think that my quality scores have improved using my NEC 3550a with Dee and Liggy's rpc1 firmware.
The scans are definately better than at 4x on both Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media.

@9mm
next step is to burn @8x on 8x rated TYs and Verbs :)
i don't have that particular model NEC, as i have the older 3520a, but, MY quality scores on 8x TY or Verbs are consistently higher when burned @8x than at 4x, i rarely ever tried @6x, so i can't say much bout that, but i get better quality burns on ALL my various drives @8x than @4x :) using quality media, as you know all too well, is key~

@9mmruger1 and docTy, thank you for a grick reply...I never even thought about doing them at 8x (4x was kind of burned into my thinking), but I will give those speeds a try as well. I ddin't think there would be quality loss, but kind of anal about things so I was just wondering. ALl I use is quality media (Taiyo Yudens, Sony's and Fujis (MIJ) and Verbs). Thanks again. Have a good day.

now how is that for a twist of irony? LOL, i'm sure no pun was intended when you said that right? j/k...juss messing with ya~ :)
try a few @8x and see how they turn out, if you find they are even "better" (quality scan wise) than your 4x or 6x burns, stick with it~ :) i do have the Liteon SOHW-1693S as a matter of fact, the actual OEM Liteon unit, not the retail Sony that you have, once again, MY best scores are obtained burning @8x on this drive too...mine is using the KSOB firmware, even though it's outdated, the burns produced are still very good @8x~ :)
docTY~
you have a good day as well~ cheers

I have been burning at 8X on both my Plex's and my BenQ with no problems on TY's which are 8x and Verbs which are 16x. I still got to stick with 4x on my old NEC but that's because it writes no faster. However, burning at 6x or 8x seems to fill the buffer up better and do not see any fluctuations. All disks are fine on playback and scans done with PlexTools.

Arnie, So you're saying it's safe/prefferable to write T02s at 8x with a BenQ?

I have not had any playback problems at 8X on my burners. Try a few out and see how they work out for you, however you should not have a problem. I still make sure I have my target set to 4330 so I stay away from burning too close to the edge, but my burns have been good. I still will burn at 4x on some backups but for movies that I may only play rarely I just do them at 8X. If you got good media, and a good burner you got to trust them.

@Doc and Arniebear, friends I have been burning at 6x, on both the Sony and Nec burners, and they have produced better readings than at 4x...they play flawlessly and look fantastic. Just wanted to say thank you for the advice. Have a good day my friends.

hehe, as ddp would say, teach and learn~ :)
or as i would say, "just burn and then burn some more" LOL
docTY~
on a Benq drive, burn 8x rated (TYG02/YUDEN000T02) @8x, at least for ME and other Benq users on similar setups, burning @8x produces the best results...results may vary, but NONE of my burns ever drop below 8x on ANY of my drives...using quality media of course~!

Yes, it is burn baby, burn, on my Yuden's. Just got my shipment from supermedia and I am happy. Been redoing all my old Xcopy backups, and editing out the 321 nag screen with DVD Remake, that way no need to re-encode and been burning the backups on TY's or Verbs at 8x and all have been coming out fantastic.

Might be a dumb question but how do you know that it gave better reading at buring at high speed. Is there a software to find out?
I always burn at 4x but lately still my sony dvd will skip on my burned dvd, even after burning at 4x.
they are Sony 1-8x. But it shows as upto 16x on my burner, but I still use 4x to burn, never used higher. Than why does it still skipping. before skipping was rare but now its like 6 out of 10 dvds skip somwhere in the movie.

@gandhrav, I use Nero to test the quality of the burns after wards. If you are having skips in the 4x or 6x it could also be the type of media and whether or not your Dvd Player handles -R or +R (that has been booktyped to Dvd Rom...emulating what an orginal dvd movie would be and play in the stand alone).
