a couple of friends of mine have kai link for their upgraded x-boxes which enables them to go online without the need for x box live. is it possible to use a psp version of this without a wireless network card/router say with USB connectivity?

No way, PSP only connects via WIfi, youll either need a wifi card/wireless router or wifi max dongle.
