I have recently replaced my version 4 ps2 laser with a khs-400c. It, works, it runs original games and dvd's but is refusing to load backups. I tried the same backups that worked with the old laser. Before i replaced i tried re-adjusting the laser, is the solution just to keep adjusting the laser until it reads the backups? I have a neo 2 chip that i use in conjunction with swap magic, the neo 2 just allows you to open the cd tray without the knowledge of the ps2.

Hmm, if it plays originals and not backups, then it won't be the laser that's the problem, but your chip.
