what rated speed? it makes a HUGE difference as to the manufacturers that you COULD possibly receive (depending if they ship you the MIT or the MIJ dvd+r) :)

the Maxell MIT in the 8x rated DVD+R format are pretty good, mostly Ritek & Ricohjpn manufacturers...and the MIJ Maxell 8x DVD+R are terrific Hitachi made media :)

however, this all goes to crap in the 16x DVD+R rated speeds...with the possibility of PHILIPSC16 or even worse, the CMCMAGM01 coded ones....

nice find, but a link would be appreciated for a more accurate determination if it's worth the price or not... :)

Maxell +4x: Ricohjpn-01
Maxell +8x: Ritek-R03
Maxell +8x: Maxell-002-00

From the 500 or so that I have burned.

Maxell +16x: ?????

4x maxells are pretty good. Those 8x maxells are even better. I find the japanese spindles of +8x for the Hitachi's.

The dash format for maxells is not so fortunant.

These rarely go on sale anymore, but Office Depot is the place. $15 per 50 pk when they go on sale=30 cents each. Well worth it for hitachis, not the riteks. The Office Depot +8x is also made by Ritek-r03 and you can get them for 20-25 cents each during their house brand buy 1 get 1 or 2 free promos.

At Fry's Electronics Maxell DVD+R 25 Pack are $12.99 & for the 50 pack they are $24.99.

Also be careful when ur getting Maxell DVD+R because there are 2 types: made in Taiwan & made in Japan...I suggest get the made in Japan version .

rmcgo:

My last several batches of plus format full hub inkjet printables has been the Maxell +8x that I get from walmart which is my neighbor.

A little pricey, but the cost of plus format media on the web brings it down to prospective.

These should code as Maxell-002-00 and are made by Hitachi of Japan. Use neroinfotool or another tool to verify the MID code.

Last few times at walmart, they had the taiwanese and japanese spindles of those same full hub 25 pk printables. I don't know what the MID code is on the taiwanese +8x spindles, but for the same price-get the japanese spindles.

Maxell-002-00 are very good. These are getting harder to find in the non full hub inkjet printables. Look for future sales at Office Depot.Sometimes they throw in those same maxell full hubs in their buy 1/get 1 free maxell sale.

Thanks Saugmon,

These are coded Maxell-002 and made in Japan, so I guess I did good.

Is it ok to burn these at 8x or should I stick to 4x?

Thanks for the heads up.

You can easily burn the MIJ Maxell 8x discs at 8x ... they even do very well at 12x

What is the main difference between the made in Taiwan versions and made in Japan versions? I have been told the Taiwan versions aren't as good, but no reason given. Do they not preserve the video quality as well?

Both the MIJ and the MIT Maxell discs use the same dye .. but for some reason, the MIJ Maxell discs have less jitter when you run a disc quality test on them .. I'm sure it has to do with the quality of the plastic

The differences between japan and taiwan is manufacturers quality.

Japan makes the finest media in the world. Taiyo yuden and Hitachi. Taiwan makes some very good media, like verbatim's Mitsubishi chemical corp, Ritek, and Ricoh. I'll burn ritek and ricoh all day long and wouldn't worry about it.They are excellent quality and perform as well as my tys/verbatims/and hitachi.

However,Taiwan also produces some crap media like Cmagnetics corp-aka cmags and others.

It's very difficult telling which spindle of maxell is made by who. For their 8x speed, Hitachi/Ritek/and cmags are some of their manufacturers. By finding the Japanese maxells, you'll get the Hitachi. Taiwanese maxells, and most likely ritek-but a slim chance of getting cmags in the dash format. Huge difference, and the price will be exactly the same whether it's Hitachi/ritek/or cmag.

I haven't encountered any maxell 16x speed,so can't confirm the manufacturer/s of all their media. But I'd pick up the Japanese spindles if I had the chance.

None of the Maxell 4x or 8x media has ever been made by CMC Mag .. the worst you're going to find in those speeds will be the occasional ProDisc .. If you purchase made in Taiwan 4x or 8x Maxell most likely you'll get Ritek (R02, R03, G04, G05) ... However, the 16x is a different story. This is where the CMC Mag crapola kicks in .. you may also get the RitekP16 which hasn't looked good in early tests ..

To be safe, when buying 16x Maxell discs, ONLY buy MIJ which are Maxell003 or MXLRG04

No sales flier for Office Depot. I very rarely see maxells on sale there anymore. I'm waiting for the special buy1/get 1 free that includes their white full hub inkjet printable maxells.

Like Deuce Bigelow would say: Those Maxell Hitachi's are "so Big and Juicy!"

catfreak- Yes sir I know I checked There too ! Lately as far as Decent to excllent quality media it looks like either Sony's of various origin 's or Verbatims at most stores or they go in the complete other direction & offer CMC produced brands especially Memorex for some reason ! Still I can live with Sony 's & verbatims given the 14.95 price range for 50 ! I was just making a wish in the previous post ! thanks for the help though catfreak! you always have something helpful to add ! happy easter my friend !

My only thing was a feverent hope that someone would put the Maxells 8x on sale so I could price match them at a local wallyworld who has or had them ( Maxells MIJ ) I have no qualms about the non japanese ones either but for the same price I'll take the japanese if I can get them Especially since they a better in the jitter department which I' did'nt really know till you brought it up ! thanks again catfreak & happy Burning !

Here in the wilderness of Canada, Maxell MIJ and MIT (+8X) media do not use the same dye, if colour is any indication.

MIJ (Maxell 002) have a blueish tinge to them, akin to Verbatim.

MIT (Ritek R03) have a reddish purple tinge.

Jitter is the deviation from exact lengths of the pits of the various defined lengths. It can be due to a number of things: non-uniform dye thickness, radial noise, radial runout, irregularities in the recording laser diode, motor spindle noise, and other deficiencies. If a drive produces discs with low jitter on some discs and high jitter on other discs, one can rule out the effects of the drive.
