Hi,

I was thinking about getting a DVD burner. I know most out there are the 4.7 gig burners. I wanted to back up all my dvds and keep the originals safe. Now I know all my movies are 9.4 gigs (2-sided?).
My question is, are there dvd burners that are 9.4 gig 2 sided? I have seen media that were 9.4 gigs. Or can I buy the 4.7 gig burners and buy the 9.4 media and just flip them to other side to to fill the whole movie?

I think i should wait 5years until 9.4 gig burners are like $100?

I assume your movies are dual layer on 1 side (dvd-9) and not a bunch of flipper discs (2-sided) but anyway, you can buy media where you can burn on both sides if you want, but you will not be seeing a burner capable of burning dual layer on 1 side for $100 in your lifetime.

Thanks for the reply LuNaTiC,
Ok, so they are ?dual layer? on one side? So 4.7gig X2 are all on one side? Can some1 provide of info on this in the for of a link? So will we need burners capable of burning dual layer one sided or is that up to the media? Basically, should I wait for dvd-9 burners or buy a burner now and wait for dvd-9 media?

Thank you for your time.

As far as I remember, the second layer in dual layer discs doesn't quite hold 4.7 GB on the second layer. But to answer your question, I believe that dual layer burners are still over $2000 and the media is proportionally expensive.

If you can wait 5 years to buy a burner it will be cheaper. But by then you will be asking "Should I buy an old style 'red' DVD burner, or a new 'blue' one? Or should I wait another 5 years until they come down in price?" (The colours refer to the types of laser, the blue is supposed to be out in 2005.)

All the bruning info you need to start is here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/141024.php#dvd9dvd2one

Dual layer burners don't exist. Movies that come on dual layer discs are done by pressing (not burning) two thin discs and then glueing them together in DVD manufacturing plant. The other layer has slightly different optical characteristics than the other one or something like that.

But summa summarum -- dual layer burners don't exist and most likely never will.

I'm sure the 9.4 gig burners will never be out, but why would you want to buy one of those when the 27GB drives will be coming out soon.
