What little time I have spent on this forum, it amazes me how many times the same questions come up. I lurked for 2-3 weeks doing nothing but reading. After I felt comfortable attempting my first burn, I did it successfully which I owe to reading all the posts I could. I was as green as they get. I never even knew the basics. (Not to say I do know)
I dont mean to put anyone down and after all....... it is a public forum, but the majority of questions could be answered by simply reading the posts. You dont even have to bother with searching, its all within the first couple pages of each forum.
Heres one important tip I learned the hard way:
After burning a couple of backups successfully, I tried a new movie backup. It turned out fine but started freezing in the middle of the movie. So, I burned another one, it did the same thing, only at a different part in the movie. I tried at least 3 more burns of the same movie and got the same results, only freezing in different places, so none were a like. I figured it was in my original movie. After nearly skinning my dog and beating my head against the wall, I figured I would try these movies in my sons SAP in his room. All movies worked fine. Now my JVC SAP plays most movies I have backed up, but when it freezes, I make a not of where it was and try it in my sons cheaper $49.00 SAP and it works fine in that one.
Lesson:
I spent days trying to figure out what went wrong. I slowed the burning to 2x, I tried everything I knew possible (which again isnt much as I am a Newbie too)only to find out there was nothing wrong. It was in my SAP, not my burnings. My more expensive JVC didnt like that one movie for some reason as it plays all my other burns just fine. I was trying to fix soemthing that wasnt even broken and I was quick to blame the software, the hardware, the memory, the original movie, whatever.
HHHmmmm, some things can only be answered/learned by experience.
Sorry, I kinda got off course there. Anyway, there should be a monitoring system to make one lurk before asking.

I havent tried cleaning lens yet, i used to think that was snake oil. But I guess I need to research the best methods and give it a try.
Again, I hope the Newbies dont think I was targeting them, I wasnt.

Its suprising on allot of threads that I have read where people state that they have trouble with certain DVD's on more expensive units where in cheaper units they will play everything.
I had the same problem. My $60 player will play everything I throw at it. Where my $200 players are picky at what it will read. I think it is this way because better DVD players are more sensitve to flaws. It picks them up easier.
Anyway my conclusion (and allot of other members conclusion) is 99% of the time it isnt a problem with the backing up procsses of the DVD or the player itself. It is uasly the media that cassues the problems. I wished I would have listened allot earlier to people that where sugesting better media.
I used to use cheap media from Wal-mart or Bestbuy (Imation/Memoriex/Fuji) Any of those would play on my cheap system where on my more expensive units they would freeze/skip/not play at all and it fustreated me.
So I finaly said enough was enough and searched for some good TY's (TYGO2) that everyone was saying to get(Or verbatimes)
I got the TY's and to my suprise they only cost $10 more then what i would pay at walmart/bestbuy. I then started using those (for the past 6-months) and have had 100% succsses on all my backups now on every player. So if your having problems with skipping/freezing etc look at the media your using. Is it good quility media?

I started out just buying the Memorex (Of course I did this before researching) so I knew I was stuck with it. No big deal I figured, might as well use them. I then the next day went and purchased some Verbatum and have experimented with both. Honestly, I havent seen a differnce between the 2 yet, as I have had freeze up's during the burning on both media. However, I have a total of 8 burns to my name so my experiments I guess would be inconclusive. I even experimented with the Dual layer which created freeze ups, but I am sure it was me as sometimes this stuff gets a little frustrating in the beginning.
I burned the DL using Nero with my Plextor external burner. My readings (in forums) indicate thats likely not a good mix.
Anybody want to buy some coasters? CHEAP!!

larrylje,
Very good point about the cheap media, my situation was similar to yours because I also started off using the cheap media like Memorex, Imitation and junk like that.. I made the switch to Taiyo-Yuden about 2 years ago and boy what a difference it a made, no more coasters period!!!! All of my dvd players in the house including the HDMI players(very picky about media) can play the Taiyo media without skipping or freezing.... My second favorite DVD Media is the Japanese Maxells......

are you aware that if the cheap stuff dont work you can take it back to the store in some cases? once i bought some cheapies and they didnt work so i took them back to bestbuys and suprisingly enough they allowed me to trade em for another brand even with 3 disks missing so if you have trouble with cheapies dont hesitate to take them back... just an FYI.. :)
BTW I use only Sony MIJ they work pretty good

It depends on the store and I guess who you get when bringing back the DVD's.
I got some DVD's from bestbuy and used like 4 of them and they where crap and I brought the remaning back and they counted how many disc where there and said they coulnt take them back unless all 50 where there.
Of course 2 of them had personal stuff on them and my computer hard drive backup and a few others had movies copyied to it. Of course I wasnt going to be dumb enough to include those used DVD's. So they wouldnt take them back.
I will never go back to cheap media again. I love the TY's
