mattdog,
This is more that likely a copy protection issue. DVD Shrink hasn't been updated for a long time and will not be, because of this, shrink alone can't handle the newer copy protection techniques placed on some of the newly released DVDs so you'll either get an error or it will simply quite on you.
Keeping it free:
Download a free ripper/decrypter called DVDFab decrypter and use it to rip the video files to your HDD, once it's done you should have a VIDEO_TS folder on your HDD, run DVD Shrink and use it to open the files, click on the open files tab and browse to where the VIDEO_TS folder is located and choose it, shrink will open/import the files and should be able to proceed as usual from that point.
Get DVDFab here;
http://209.172.35.173/download/DVDFabDecrypter29.exe
Here's a guide if need on using it;
http://www.dvdshrink.info/dvdfab_decrypter.php
The other option is to use AnyDVD, its a driver that runs in the backround to crack the encryption and help shrink produce a backup. It's free for 21 days, if interested, check it out here;

You may have a bad pressing. DVD Decrypter is better for ripping problem DVDs (bad pressings scratched DVDs). Here is a fix for fun with Dick and Jane:
http://rapidshare.de/files/17789224/D_J_Fix.zip.html
Download and follow the directions in the readme. This will leave a widescreen movie only with a functional Main menu. If you get any type of errors while ripping, then for sure there is something worng with your disc. You should first clean it and try again. If it fails the second time, exchange the disc for a new one.
If you want different results, you can try using a PSL. You will need PGCEdit and the ARccOS plugin. All the info can be found here:
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56078
You can also try DVDFab using a different drive.
I would not recommend AnyDVD on this one because DVDFab should be able to rip this movie. Also, the fix I posted above will work as well.

ok see i download the fix but was lost from the start. The only application i have is DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink and i just downloaded dvdfab but as u can see that didnt work..ummmm i didnt know what to do on the second thing where it says select PGC 1 in VTS_06 i dont know what that is and the rest of the stuff
-Launch DVD Decrypter in IFO Mode
-Select PGC 1 in VTS_06
-Uncheck cells 1 thru 52 in Chapter 1
-Rip the movie
-Rename the VTS from VTS_06_*.VOB to VTS_01_*.VOB
-Move all the files except the README.TXT into the VIDEO_TS folder

mattdogg,
There no need to go thru that proceedure.
As stated by jasonyhap above:
DVDFab decrypter should be able to rip this DVD to your HDD with no problems at all, if you're getting a persistant error while trying, it's possible you've got a bad disk. Keep in mind, just because it plays fine in your player, doesn't mean that there's nothing wrong with it, so try and exchange it for another and then try to make a backup from that one.

Anydvd (21Day Trial) Clonedvd2 (21 Day Trial) for best quality main movie only or if you want the menus and still 100% no compression decide what ver of the movie you want (Wide Screen or Full Screen) and backup everything but the other ver..
or
DVD Fab Decrypter & DVD Shrink
if you're having a problem opening the files in shrink Process the files with Vob Blanker (blank the ver of the movie you don't want if you like) and then run through Dvd Shrink

So how many Dick and Jane threads are there now?
Anyway, even with the newest version of AnyDVD, I got the navigation error with Shrink. Now, I didn't start a new thread and ask the same question everyone else did. Instead, I ran it through DVDFab first. Opened those files with VOBB. I removed/blanked the fullscreen version (I hate full screen). I opened up Shrink, the entire disc is now a DVD5, and I successfully created an ISO that was to be burned by Decryptor.
Now I have the full disc of Dick and Jane but it's a DVD5.
Latest AnyDVD to rip > VOBB to blank the unwanted on a DVD > Shrink to compress > ImgBurn to burn = Never starting a thread asking how to backup a movie

I think the real question here is " has anyone successful rip Fun with Dick and Jane " or being a new DVD has Sony came out with something DVD Decryptor cannot decrypt or even DVDFAB. I tried both and had no success

http://www.dvdhounds.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3583#post3583
or you could just as well use the psl2 wizard to make your own
*note my psl file is intended for R1 release
I must admit craprovision through a lot of work into this one took me about 15 min's to undo it :)

well i guess i might be the only one thinking this, but i hope everybody is almost finished copying this movie. i am really tired of seeing threads pop up everyday about this movie. i wished more people knew how to use the "search" function, it was put on here for a reason.

maybe you should write a "how to use a forum" guide :)
but then we would see a thousand how do I use a forum posts.

rotfl you should start a thread and maybe we could get it stickied :)
I rarely post here just because of this problem, I think it's been maybe two years this has been going on so I don't think it's going to stop now.
but it's worth a try.

@mattdogg,
If you want to try the fix again, it is very simple.
Launch DVD Decrypter
Go into Mode=>IFO
There will be 3 boxes. A big one on the right and two smaller ones underneath. The big box shows the VTS/PGC. After you expand a VTS, it will show the PGC. PGC is a program chain or video title.
DVD Decrypter will select the main movie, but make sure it is in VTS_06 (there is a full-screen version in VTS_07 I think).
Now, on the small box to the left on the bottom, it will read Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc... Select chapter 1. Now look at the small box next to this one. It will display the cells (cell 1, cell 2, cell, 3, etc...). Uncheck all except the last 2 of the Chapter.
Now, rip and you are finished with DVD Decrypter.
Browse the the DVD Folder (VIDEO_TS) and rename the VOB files to VTS_01_*.VOB. The "*" is a wildcard, so you will have VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB, etc...
After, drag and drop the downloaded files to the VIDEO_TS folder and you are ready to burn or process with DVD Shrink. If it asks to replace any files, click "Yes".
It will automatically apply all of the fixes that I listed in the readme. The DVD Will load much faster and it will raise compatibility with cheaper media and older DVD Players.
