What media are you using to burn your backup games? I had the same problem before with my AR, make sure you use good quality DVDs...

this is one method i use to use with my V7 and AR Max, worked for me.

Using AR Max To Load Back Up Games With Codes

you will need Swap Magic
DVDLoader (can get it here) http://members.cox.net/candrid2/index.html
you burn the DVDLoader to a DVD
and your AR Max disc of course
Note: if you are loading a CD game or have an older V4 or below PS2 you may need to use CDLoader instead of DVDLoader, and you may need to use the CD version of Swap Magic and not the DVD version.

1. Put in your AR Max disc and when it loads up choose expert mode. Go down the list and choose your game and start with codes as you normally would.

2. When the AR Max asks for the disc PRESS EJECT and put in your Swap Magic DVD

3. When the Swap Magic asks for a disc SWAP using your slidecard or fliptop for the DVDLoader disc

4. When DVDLoader tells you to swap using EA method you PRESS EJECT and put your Swap Magic DVD back in

5. When Swap Magic asks for a disc SWAP using your slidecard or fliptop.

This should load your back up games with the cheat codes, enjoy

yes, you can not use back ups on a slimline without either an aftermarket flip top, or a set of tools which go by many names like
Magic Switch, Slimtool, Ghost Switch
these keep the PS2 from resetting when you open the lid to swap them.
Also a set of Swap Magic discs if you do not have them, most online stores will sell the two items as a combo.
The DVD Loader program mentioned can be found for free download on the web

if you have a PS2 that's modded then why the need for the aftermarket fliptop? or slim tools etc etc?

because the mod chips automatically turn themselves off after the 1st boot so if you boot AR Max whether it be retail or a backup then the chip will turn itself off, when you try to load your backup game from AR Max you have no modchip running and therefore the game will not run, so you need magic swap to run it

No they don't?
Not sure who told you that but they had no idea what they were talking about. Some chips may, but most you have to press certain buttons to disable. Mine works just fine with back ups and AR Max.
I stick in AR Max, go to expert mode, choose the game and codes i want, press start and then select start game with codes, then when it asks for the game i put in the back up.

Matrix Infinity
Turning Off the Infinity:
Press start from Joypad 1 until the writing "DISABLED" will appear on screen. The infinity is now disabled until PS2 turned off to Standby Position.

DMS4 Pro
To disable DMS4, hold down L1 on controller 1 as the PS2 is booting. You will see a message saying that the modchip has been disabled. Insert your game and reset the console - the modchip will now be disabled and will stay disabled until the PS2 is placed in standby.

Duo2 and Duo2SE
Disable Mode:
- Hold the RESET button until the "blue clouds" comes up on the TV.

Magic V
? For turn OFF/SLEEP, power up from STANDBY with RESET button held until the logo/sounds comes on; then release RESET and the

Messiah 2
To turn the modchip off (to play PS1 games that may detect the modchip): Turn off the PS2 (go to standby) and hold reset for at least 5 full seconds. The next time you reset the PS2 the modchip will turn itself back on.

How to disable Ripper3:
When PS2 is switched on, press Reset 3x and the Chip is disabled.
