I am going crazy with these Verbs. I bought Verbatim White Inkjet Printable DVD-R 16X at Sams Club and have burned them on my Lite-On SOHW 1673S, firmware JSOC. Every other one has been a coaster. I have tried burning at both 6X and 8X. My TY Hub Printable burn all the time with no coasters, but I do not like the shiny printable surface so if I want the stacking holes I need something other than TY. I have heard that Verbatims were the next best thing so went to Sams, bought a 100-pk and had lots of coasters, so tried another pack thinking that maybe it was just a bad lot. They are also bad. These say made in Taiwan. Is there an inkjet printable (big hole) made in Japan? Am I buying the wrong ones? I used to buy the Ritek 8X white inkjet printable (with the big holes) but their quality went way down. Any suggestions?

Mine are the same code - MCC 03RG20. I burned 13 and 6 of that were bad. About 80% of the way through the movie, it would stutter and stop.

I'd update that firmware for the Lite-on 1673s. JS0D is the latest update here:

(big hole)
All blank dvds have the same size hole, just like cds.Approx 14.5 mms.

Do you mean:
Full hub-prints up to the hole?
Regular hub-prints about 12 mms from the hole?

Yes, you are right. I know the holes are the same size, I've just always called it big hole and little hole. I've checked the firmware periodically - didn't realize there was a new one. Can that really make a difference? What is the ID MCC 03RG20? Is that a good disc or not?

actually, when you are having issues like the ones you are having now with the 16x Verbs DVD-R, a firmware update is A MUST have to try to alleviate SOME of the problems, firmware updates usually add more MID codes to the firmware table and in doing so, better quality burns are achieved...this is not ALWAYS the case, but more often than not, it DOES help to be updated with your drive's latest revision~ :)

as to the MCC03RG20, those are good quality 16x DVD-R format media, the only one at THIS present time i PERSONALLY find to be a "little better" on MY setups/drives, is the Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-R TYG03 coding~ :)

gotta compare apples to apples here, same rated speed, same format, i just PERSONALLY feel the Taiyo Yudens are better~ :)

you mentioned in your first post that you've used TY hub printables (white ones= hub printable, silver ones are NOT hub printables) and had no coasters, but your "complaint" with them is aesthetic, since you don't like the "shiny printable surface" (which in this case suggests to me that you were using the silver NON-hub printables, not the inkjet FULL HUB printable WHITE ones????) that is a bit confusing...

anyways, before switching media again, i suggest the firmware update to see if that helps, if not, then, go back to the TYs that WERE working well for ya~ :) i have 2 liteon drives, one below ur model, the SOHW 1633S and one above your model, the SOHW 1693S, both my liteons PREFER the DVD-R format and from experience i can tell you that MY burns on 16x Verbs DVD-R with the MCC03RG20 MID coding have been pretty good, but my firmware for both drives is ALWaYS "up-2-date" :)

docTY~

I do a lot of backups for my kids so that the grandkids don't scratch the originals. I print on the disc with my Epson R200 and depending on the original label will decide which disc I use, either a full hub or regular hub. I use TY hub printables but when I need a regular hub, the only TY makes is the shiny surface. I don't like the way they look after printing which is why I have been buying the Verbatims. If TY made a regular hub printable, I would rather buy that.
I have updated my firmware so will see if that helps. Thanks alot for your help.

Rephrasing - if TY made a white printable non-hub printable, that is the one I would prefer, hence the Verbatims.

try the firmware update to see if that resolves any of the probs~ :)

as to Taiyo Yuden, there are only 2 choices right now:

white FULL hub inkjet-printables

OR

silver non-hub inkjet-printables

:)

so, for your purposes of being NON-FULL hub, TY doesn't offer the white, but do the silver :P (i prefer the 'holographic' look of the silver non-hub printables myself, but to each their own) :)

docTY~

@movies27

good to see you are liking the 16x verbs...burn on buddy...

It sounds as though there is a problem with the ink contracting and causing out-of-focus problems ("tilt") at the outside edge. This is the chief reason why paper labels are no good for DVDs; but it happens frequently with printable discs, particularly DL discs where focus error is particularly critical for the transition. If you can scan the discs for PIE errors and see a gradual rise toward the end of the disc (sometimes declining a bit before the edge), that is the same error profile a disc with a tilt problem will show. There are several different suppliers of printable white inks, and some are far more prone to contraction after curing than others. If you find some that work consistently well for you, stick with them--and check the recorded ones regularly to verify they have not begun to contract.
