Hi,
Let me apologise in advance, I can tell from my searches that you have answered this question ALOT but I have spent a good couple of hours reading through posts. I have found some good info and think I may have narrowed it down but would just like to be sure.
Basically I have made a backup of a movie which I converted using WinAVI then burnt using Magic DVD Copier(x4). I go to watch it in my Sony RDR GX210 which is less than 4months old and it freezes within 20 secs. Thought it may have been because I burnt it incorrectly using Magic DVD so I changed my methods and used Img Tool then Img burn. Same thing happens.
I skip forward when it freezes and then about 20 seconds later it will freeze again. I have skipped a few chapters and it seems to be ok further into the film. Have noticed that on my DVD and AMP display an icon seems to go off just as the DVD freezes. Think its either a Dolby Surround or Stereo icon. Does this mean that there may be a problem with the audio? (The sound and picture when it does play is quality by the way.)
I have tried the DVD-R in a cheap DVD player which cost about £30 form Aldi and its fine. Its annoying as hell when you pay over £200 for a Sony player that wont play it. I have also copied 2 other DVD-9 movies on to the same DVD+R discs using Magic DVD Copier which were also fine.
My DVD Drive: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N (Anyone know who actually manufactured this)
Media: Phillips DVD+R x8
Any help/ideas are greatly recieved!

Get the freeware app FixVTS. It processes DVD files for compliance. Open FixVTS, Open the DVD files you're going to burn. Uncheck the boxes in FixVTS, drag a VOB file onto the FixVTS window and then select Full DVD to process all the files in your folder. Then try burning the processed files (Which should consist of IFO, BUP, and VOB files in a VIDEO_TS folder).

there is nothing wrong with your AMP! Your lights go off when the DVD freezes or skips because of the interruption of the DVD!
It's definately a media problem!~ Philips disks are not the best of brands ........ try Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Sony, Maxel.... to name a few! Rule of thumb is the ones MADE IN JAPAN are the better disks!
If you get the +R disks then you can book type your DVD writer to DVD-ROM so your burns will be more compatible to most DVD players. Read this: http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
you drive looks like an LG writer but I can't find it on the FIRMWARE PAGE: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=176753 found this thread in the LG section of CDFreaks.

C***st, u guys are fast!!
Thanks for the help, much appreciated.
@IHoe - Sorry may have worded the question wrong. Didnt think the problem with my AMP, thought there may have been a problem with the way in which the audio was burnt. You answered the question for me though either way! Thanks.

IHoe makes a good point, but the symptoms you describe can be either a problem with the media or defective file structure recorded to the DVD. In the past I've used Philips without problems, that's why I suggested doing a quick compliance check of the files being recorded. Once that is checked out and possibly eliminated, a person would need to look to the media. A point of interest when scanning DVDs, some software shows bad sectors and there's no difference in whether the sectors are part of a flawed disc or a bad write to the disc.
Your drive is an LG at least that's what the designation matches. http://www.censuspc.com/LG-Electronics-GWA-4082N-8x-DVD-RW-Slim-D... Though when checking the LG site that number doesn't come up. Did the drive come installed in a PC you purchased? If so what brand is it? LG suggests the user check with OEM suppliers instead of direct for OEM firmware updates. One thing to be aware of when dealing with any hacked firmware you may run into; avoid it unless you're 100% positive it matches and you're willing to take a gamble on your drive. Any time one runs into media problems, the first thing to do is check for the latest firmware and then check out the media. In the past I've seen firmware problems and the firmware not being updated, which left some media incompatible with some drives.

By the way he meant the laptop was discontinued not the drive. Looked confusing when I read it back.

For a DVD you have a VIDEO_TS folder, in that are the VOB(s). If not, the files aren't DVD compliant.
As for the drive, I've had to update firmware on new drives right out of the box. Depends on wheter R&D decided to make changes before you take delivery.

Thanks bro bear, found a VOB file in the folder was trying to drag the whole folder in @ first then I was dragging the "backup of the IFO" not sure what that is by the way.
I am worried that I have lost some of the movie while converting. When I attempt to burn the VIDEO_TS folder with NERO its only 45mins long whereas the original AVI is 1hr30mins approx.
Any ideas mate? Thanks for your time.

Well, you seem to have lost something. The file size of the conversion is different in DVD than AVI, but the content and run time should be the same. Once you do the conversion, you first check the converted DVD source to see if it's all there with a viewer. If not playable, that's where the FixVTS can sometimes help. There you uncheck the boxes in FixVTS, drag a VOB to the FixVTS window and select Full DVD for the processing. Compare the DVD source size to the FixVTS processed files. They should be almost if not the same size. The FixVTS folder may be 2x if you opted for the backup. Open the processed files and see if your entire project is still intact. FixVTS is a tried tool that does an excellent job. I'd trust it over the WinAVI conversions. BTW, there have been complaints on that app. You can download the full function Nero trial and use Nero Vision 4 to do the conversion to compare to the WinAVI. ConvertXtoDVD from VSO does a good job as well, but their trial leaves the output marked. Sometimes it takes a little checking to see where and if things have gone wrong. Good luck.

Thanks for your help mate. Have got CovertX now, much more user friendly than WinAVI and TMGEnc IMO and the finished result is quality. For any "Newbies" (like me) reading this; get ConvertXToDVD! You will not regret it.
One more thing I want to ask you though Brobear is; would you recommend using Nero to burn the files once ConvertX has converted them or is the burn facility within ConvertX sufficient?
Thanks again for your help, much appreciated

You're welcome.
I've got a habit of checking content, especially with AVI conversions, before burning. Anything from the HDD, I usually use Nero Express to burn. If you're wanting to go ahead and burn straight from ConvertXtoDVD, the software is sufficient for the task. VSO is good software with lots of experience in burner applications. Nero has conversion software that does a good job as well. I have both the Nero 7 with Nero Vision 4 and the ConvertXtoDVD. I like both.

Sorry, one more Brobear!
Have got Nero 7 but what application do I use for the conversion process? Or is it part of Nero Vision 4 that you mentioned?
Thanks mate

No problem. Nero Vision 4 (NV4) is one of the programs in the Nero 7 suite. NV4 does the conversions.
You're welcome.
