OK THIS IS HOW I GOT ERROR 16 I INSALLED A SOFTMOD I DID NOT
LIKE IT SO I UNSTALL IT AND IT GAVE ERROR 16...................
CAN ANY BODY TELL ME HOW TO FIX ERROR 16???????????????

Ok, listen up, since you already know how to sofmod thats a start, what you do is softmod your xbox again and after you do that, put a game that has xbox live ( pretty much all of them ), and try to connect to xbox live with you ethernet cable connect, it will then update your dashboard and you will lose your softmod and return back to the normal xbox dashboard, if you got confused, just write back. what did you do? did you make backup for msdash?
Do you know about PC?
When you boot the xbox without a game in dvd drive, do you see microsoft logo appear under XBOX?

I have the same problem...I deleted the softmod and now I get error 16. When I boot my xbox I dont see the microsoft logo under XBOX...so I dont think I can hotswap the harddrive into my computer. I have all the files backed up though.

If you can borrow a modchip from your friend and install it into your xbox, then You can fix it.
When done return the chip back to your friend.

sadly I dont have my eeprom or a friend with a modchip :( i can not unlock my hard drive... I think my only option is the modchip. I've been trying off and on for about four months trying to fix my XBOX, and every time my hope for success is shot down by the fact that i did not copy down my hard drive key.
