Hi, I have a V7 PS2 with a professionally installed DMS4 Pro modchip. Even before it was fitted with the chip, the PS2 read DVD-R movies flawlessly, better than any other dvd player I have used. Once the chip was installed, it also read backup games flawlessly. About a week ago, in transport to a friend's house, the bookbag I was carrying my PS2 in came opened and my PS2 (although wrapped in the softest shirt I have) plummited onto my sidewalk. Now, when watching DVD-R movies, it will skip occasionally. Not always at the same places, but more random. My backup games still play flawlessly, as well as original DVD's. So here's my question:

What could be causing the skipping? Obviously this thing wasn't meant to be dropped, so please don't hate on me for that. More specifically, I mean, what possible parts could be jarred in a way to make DVD-R movies to malfunction, but nothing else? Laser, Processor, etc? Thanks for the help.

P.S. On a side note, I noticed this problem while at the beach. I had not tried to watch any movies before going to the beach. I also think that the increased salt and humidity may play a part in the malfunctioning of my PS2. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I have a slimline PS2 with DMS4 Pro chip and it played most movies just fine, but others i had the same problem as you do.
It was never dropped.
do you have the latest flash upgrade for your chip ToxicOS V0.41?

If all games and other DVD's play fine then i doubt the laser is off.

Actually, when I purchased my chip and had it installed, the installer flashed it with Toxic Bios V 1.4. This seemed kind of odd to me, as most people run Toxic OS with a DMS4 PRO, and Toxic Bios with a DMS4 Lite. Regardless, I never checked into it because I never had any problems. I'm the kind of person that sticks with what works. Would re-flashing my PS2 with the same Toxic Bios V 1.4 be in the cards for a solution?

Not really, you really need the ToxicOS and not the ToxicBIOS
The OS has more features and is just what the DMS4 Pro is meant to have. I loaded the ToxicBIOS once on mine because the newest OS was not yet released, big mistake! it had problems loading some games it loaded fine before with the old ToxicOS

Just download the ToxicOS V 0.41, unzip it, burn the CUE file you get onto a CD, and play it in the PS2
It may not solve the problem but at least you will be running the latest and correct flash for your chip. then again it may :)

I understand totally the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" theory

I re-flashed my PS2 with Toxic OS V 0.41, and the installation process went very well. Unfortunately, the problem still persists. My backup DVD's still skip as they did. Any other ideas for what could be causing the problems?

P.S. --- Steimy, although your fix didn't cure my problem, I appreciate the info about the differences in the two software progams (Toxic OS vs. Toxic Bios). Thanks to you, I now have the correct software for my PS2.
