For starters, what kind of software do I need to edit, burn, decrypt, and convert movies? Which software program(s) do you suggest using?

RE: CONVERT
I have files in AVI and MPG/MPEG on my computer, what do I need to convert them to, in order to burn them to DVD (mpg, dvd, ???)? I've seen VCD/AVI/MPG/MPEG/WMV/ASF/DIVX/SVCD/MPEG-1/MPEG-2/MPED-4 files, can you explain these formats to me? What is their purpose? Which one is best to use for what purpose? HELP!!!

RE:SHRINK
How do I shrink the converted movie so that I can burn them on a DVD. I can burn a few MPG files to a DVD, but some are too large to fit on one disk and I don't know how to make them fit on 1 disk.

RE: BURN
I am using ROXIO DVD Builder, there has to be a better burn program that allows you to more with it. Any Suggestions?

Explain "edit" and "decrypt" to me. Edit is pretty much a given, but what does "decrypting" do, what is the purpose?

Please tell me in what order each of these steps need to be done in. Is there seperate software for each, or is there a software that will do it all?

Please Advise!! Thank you for your help.... angel2006

Everyone has their own preferences for the first set of questions you asked.

What I would suggest you do is click on the Glossary and Guide tabs on the top of the page. Start reading and learning. Try some of the different ways of doing things (asking questions if needed)from the guides. See what works best and is easy to understand for you. As your experience grows, try some more different things. Always ask when in doubt.

I'll suggest a preference that covers most of a user's needs. Nero 7. The suite has the Nero Vision 4 that does conversions of various AVI formats to DVD. Recode can transcode DVD files to fit the appropriate DVD size. You can go with DVD5 or 9. You have the Nero burning ROM and the Nero Express for your burning needs. Recode will transcode and burn in one job. The only thing you don't have is a DVD decryption program for doing backups of factory DVDs. AVI files are encrypted, so no need unless you're going to branch out to backing up your DVDs. There's all kinds of guides at the Nero site and a big help section here at AD.

For Decryption many of us are now using AnyDVD from Slysoft. Plenty of info on that.

Getting back to your one stop shopping though. Nero has a full function trial you can download. So you have a long time to play with it before you need to purchase.

For Factory DVDs the process is:
Decrypt (can include the need to process for compliance due to new copyright protections)
Transcode
Burn

For AVI Files:
Convert to DVD
Transcode (if needed)
Burn
