What is this I hear about companies putting a film on the surface of DVD's so you can't make a backup copy? Just wondering because someone I know ran into this.

Never heard of this one!

Think about it, if there was a cover (of some sort) that prevented the laser of a writer from reading it, wouldn't it also prevent the laser from a player from reading?

Never heard of it either, sounds like a Urban Legend someone thought up for a laugh, or an excuse why they couldn't copy a DVD.

At this stage there is NO DVD available that cannot be backed up.

If the story was true it'd be either reported here or one of the other major forums.

Just disregard it, it belongs in the same basket as the 'tracking chip' that Blockbuster Video installs also.

I think thats the clear protection film that some rental companies are using. Its for the protection of the disc and has nothing to do with reading or writing. Sort of like clear tape. I read that if not applied properly it will cause problems similar to stick on labels but on the bottom side. Another piece of junk someone came up with.

That must be it. I think the person that told me is paranoid. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

This is most likely the film protection. I remember seeing them in Walmart, seemed like a gimmick to me and darn expensive.

I think it would be a TOTAL waste of money.
