i got (i think) a messiah 4 modchip installed in my ps2 about a year ago, looks like its died because my ps2 only plays dvds and regular (not backup) games now.

i was wondering what should my next route be? that swapmagic business or what?

once you get use to a chip it will be hard to go back to using Swap Magic. Any game would work with your chip, but some may have to be rebuilt or patched and reburned to work with Swap Magic

Are you sure that you somehow did not just disable the chip and turn it off? I would surely check into that before you do anything drastic.

But getting another, GOOD, chip installed would be what i suggest.
DMS4 Pro or Matrix Infinity

not sure if the Messiah4 works the same but here:

Messiah2

PS2 CD/CDr/DVD/DVD-r : Insert the disc and close tray. Hold reset to power off to standby mode. Let go of reset button. Tap reset button quickly, to start.

PSX CD/CDr and DVD movies: Insert the disc and hold reset for a few seconds to turn off the PS2 (standby). Turn the PS2 back on by holding reset until the blue light on the eject button lights up.

You should always turn the PS2 off (standby) for a few seconds before changing between modes (PSX, DVD, PS2 - copies and originals).

To turn the modchip off (to play PS1 games that may detect the modchip): Turn off the PS2 (go to standby) and hold reset for at least 5 full seconds. The next time you reset the PS2 the modchip will turn itself back on.

Could also be that a solder point came loose somewhere. Have a look inside your PlayStation 2. If a wire is loose, solder it back.
