thanks brobear you have been very helpful as has nemo101 thanks guys very much i will go to best buy and see if they can put the wire in i ordered another pioneer burner i like them a lot so when i go ill have them throw the wire in it also and maybe a 300 gig hd also lol anyways thanks a lot and ill post back when i can burn that quick ciao ciao

Besides being sure your drives are in good shape and in DMA, there's more to performance speeds doing DVD copies. Whatever software is being used, the processor is a key factor, along with that is ample RAM. Then one has to look at the software in use as far as over all time goes. Some software takes longer than others. Even with an average PC, I'm taking about 2.5 hours to do a transcode and build with RB/CCE. With most transcoders I can easily do a backup in less than an hour.
You're welcome as far as the help goes. I hope you get things worked out the way you want soon. BTW, on new optical drives, they usually come with new cables, unless they're OEM or a "bargain" package. At that, I've still seen a lot of OEM include the cables. So keep an eye on things so you don't get sold a cable and the installer gets to keep the one that came with your drive. ;)

i just put 2 gigs of ram in; still slow burning wise i mean and in pio mode best buy told me 80 dollars to check it out should i?

Sounds a bit steep. Did you check with Dell to see what they charge, that is if you have a Dell store nearby? Dell might be be able to check your system via the net, if they have that type support. Not being a computer type, you'll need someone to check it for you. When a system won't switch into DMA, that indicates there's a problem that needs to be taken care of.

Do you play computer games by any chance??? Make sure your PC is not infected with Starforce. Starforce is used to "copy protect" some games. It can force your optical drives into PIO mode as well as cause other problems. Check your PC for Starforce Drivers. I think you can spot them in Device Manager (the place where you set the DMA mode for your IDE drivers and other settings). Here is a link to the Starforce Removal Tool:

Also, get a new cable as suggested (make sure you have an 80-wire cable). They are a couple of bucks. You can tell the difference because the wires are very thin compared to the 40 wire. look at your HDD cable. This one is 80-wire, so go out and buy an extra one of those and use it for your optical drives.
The statement that Pioneer makes about the speed requirements if for burning at 16x. However, there is a chance that a 40 wire will keep you in PIO mode, but I only use 80 wire, so I do not know for sure.
As for the $80 tech support, I don't know about that. Those Geek Squad people are a bunch of idiots. I went with my cousin to get a video card a few months ago and they were trying to push a PCI FX5200 for $90 (NOT PCI Express) and they insisted that there is NO WAY a PC as old as my cousins (Sept of 2004) would have an AGP slot!!
You are better off taking your PC to the zoo and have a bunch of hungry bears look at it. You will get better results.
Some other things you can try are Virus/malware scans. These things can cause problems with a system.
You can also try to update the IDE Drivers. Find your motherboard make and download the correct drivers for your motherboard. The Generic Windows Drivers are not that good.
I don't remember if you checked, but make sure your firmware is up to date. This can make a big change in the performance.
As someone else mentioned, defragging a HDD can make a big impact.
As for RAM while more is better, 512MB is more than enough to handle backups as long as you do not multitask and run a clean windows without the eye candy. However, since you have 2GB, you are better off. This will ensure that your PC will run smoothly once you get everything taken care of.
Also, turn off Auto-run on your PC. Sometimes these DVDs/CDs install stuff that can cause problems in your system. You can alternately run AnyDVD, but if you do not have it, do this:
Open the start menu and select "run". Now type "regedit" and hit enter.
Now Expand: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>
Expand: SYSTEM>
Expand: CurrentControlSet>
Expand: Services>
Click on: Cdrom>
Double click on "AutoRun" and set the value to "0". Click OK and exit. Auto run will be disabled when your PC is rebooted.
This will prevent your drive from launching autorun.inf. This means when you want to install some software, you will have to navigate in the CD/DVD and launch setup.exe (or whatever the file is called) yourself.
You should also make sure that anything like drag to disc, InCD, etc.. is disabled. If your drive came with the Ulead or whatever software, you may want to do a custo install. If you have Nero or another CD/DVD burning software, do not install this.
There are lots of other things you can look at, but I am not the best in this area. I am sure you will get some more responses shortly.

ok ok guys thanks for the all the help i used and did recieve i went out and did what a couple posters said. id rather try to fix myself and mess it up and pay to fix than pay to fix and do nothing myself get me? anyways i put 2 gigs of ram my comp is way fast now and two i went out and but a new wire for my optical drives! and for some reason read some posts again and then put my dvd burner in master and my cd drive in slave restarted and reset everything and bam wow holy sh*^ i can burn start to finish in 17 minuts thanks for the help this is the greatest site with some of the best people and help here thanks a lot again and i also used AnyDVD and clonedvd2 ok good night this case is close ciao ciao

As long as the power is disconnected and you discharge static electricity, all you have to remember is to handle with care and don't be rubbing your fingers on the circuits. There's really not much in a PC except the drives, board, PSU, and cables. For the novice, it's best to put things back as found, unless someone supplies a solution that calls for change.
