Recorded DVD will not fast forward, etc.

I have copied several -R disks using a Samsung DVD VR320 using "direct copy" from VCR to a DVD. After following the steps to finalize the disk once recorded, it will play on another DVD player, however, it freezes if you want to rewind or fast forward. The only way to get it to "unfreeze" is to turn it off. Sorry for such a "newbie" question. Am I doing something wrong?

it could be the media in which you recorded to. What brand of disk did you record onto?

I tried two brands: one was Fuji and the other was an Imation and got the same result.

What write speed are the disks, some of the DVD-Recorders will have problems with the newer 16x media. Check and see of there is a fw update available for your Recorder, I just updated my Panasonic so it would recognize newer media.

I checked to see if your drive has a firmware update...... and Samsung DVD VR320 is not even listed..... are you sure you got the drive name correct?
Some Fuji disks are ok.... some aren't! check for the manufacturers ID by using Nero Info Tool, DVDIdentifier, DVDInfo Pro, even DVDDecrypter will give you this information. The Imation disks are not that good at all. here is a media guide that will give you better information: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Use Taiyo Yuden (you can order them online at supermediastore.com, meritline.com, rima.com), Verbatim, Sony, Maxel..... keep in mind the better disks are MADE IN JAPAN, so read the labels!
a recorded DVD shouldn't freeze when using the fast forward or reverse buttons. use better media is the first thing to avoid problems later. Then if you're still having problems you can eliminate this and find a better solution.

I'm looking at the manual for my stand alone recorder and it states Samsung DVD-VR320. Thanks for the advice on the disks. I'll look into that.

I don't know if you can update the firmware of a stand alone DVD player.

you learn something every day here. Arniebear..... I had no idea that you can update the firmware of a stand alone recorder.... I just finished reading the PDF file! can you update a players firmware? I have a Sony DVP-NC650V....I think I'll try to look it up. thanks for that info!!

So far I have not found any for a player, heard you can on some Toshibas. But many recorders are updateable, since they burn and must be able to read the new media.

Yeah players can be updated as well. Cool little feature that allows for macrovision removal, region code removal, etc. Kinda depends on the equipment you have, so I like to look up the best hacks for players or recorders BEFORE buying them.

Go to the site I gave you there are two files one is an instruction guide for updating and the other is the update file. You will dl the fw udate file and put it on a CD and then insert that CD into your recorder to flash. Read the instructions on how to do it.

Downloading the update was easy -- as were the rest of the directions. Now I need to copy another video to disk and still it also freezes when used in another DVD player which was my original problem. Thanks for the help!

this might not work on some,unplug (a/c) ye dvd player and leave off for 5 min or more,what this does is resets the player to default settings....

Unplug and allow to reset the "playing" DVD player that stalls with the copied disks or the "recording" one I just updated?

hi, martha. I joined this forum because of you! I bought a vr-320 yesterday, then read this thread, and haven't even opened the box yet! Wondered how your recorder is doing? Is your problem fixed? Hope it's ok to ask on here. I'm a novice at this too.

The recorder is great. I find it very easy to operate and the VHS to DVD copies are great. The problem is better, but I'm thinking I don't have a really good quality DVD so I'm going to look into some others and that will probably improve.
