I wonder if that is an overheating problem. You could try blowing any dust out...just make sure you are getting airflow through whatever fans and or openings you can locate.

I would also reinstall Shrink. However you mentioned that this does not happen all the time. It seems to me that if you are missing something then it would fail each and every time.

Also, make sure you are not running a bunch of other applications at the same time. Sometimes it helps to run msconfig and see whats starting. Maybe there are some applications that don't need to be running.

You could also switch Shrink to low priority mode which may help:

Edit > Preferences > Check the "Run analysis and backup in low prioity mode to improve multi-tasking" box.

Don't know if any of this will help though.

Possible Explanation, take it as you will:

A reason you may get this error is due to a virus called 'Nimda'.
**Or
Try run sfc /scannow with the original XP CD.
If still isn't fixed, you may need to do a repair
install of XP. After the repair install, you need to
re-activate windows and update the patches, security fixes, etc...
then run a chkdisk, disk clean up, and defrag.
Backup your important data files first for just in case.

Try running a complete virus and spyware/adware scan first, this may eliminate the problem.
