I have a large Video Cassette collection.Ive tried backing them up to dvd on my pc but many are protected and wont back up. Is there a way to back them up without cost as many are no longer available and are degrading fast. Can anyone help.
P.S.Is there a way to get dvd shrink to copy vhs?

it is probably macrovision that is stopping you backing it up to dvd, you can get macrovision removal devices/cables. do a google search to see if you can find anything to suit your needs.

once the files are in dvd format you could use shrink to compress them, but as they are from vhs they will probably already be low quality & shrinking them will reduce the quality even more. personally i wouldn't compress them because of the quality you would lose.

I have done this several times for friends and family with old VHS Tapes. You will need a Card to capture the output of the VCR, you will need a program to capture the output( programs such as Nero and Roxio can do this, VirtualDub is free and can do this also), and a program to shrink the output. A burner to put the files on a DVD. I know this was really vague and general but if you are serious about doing this I am 100% willing to help you through it. So if you really want to do this post back with what type of cards you have installed in your pc and any software you have for burning video. If you do decide to do this I will get a whole lot more detailed with my replys.

To PeaInAPod.
Thanks for the offer but I have no trouble at all with many of my vhs collection (many have been backed up with no trouble using my pc or my liteon stand alone dvd recorder) the problem is with a few that won't back up because the contents is copy protected.
I was hoping there would be a way to trick my pc into backing them up.

What model liteon do you have Zarin? There are several that have a little code that turns off Macrovision. If yours is one of those, you may have all you need to solve your problem.
