I have used DVD Shrink to copy the main movie off a DVD to my hard drive. I do not want to subsequently burn it to another DVD but only view it on the laptop. I would like to minimise the space the movie takes up and would appreciate if someone could tell me if it is ok to delete the BUP files and just keep the VTS files? Will deletion of the BUP files cause any playback problems? As far as I can ascertain from info on the Net, the BUP files are used in menu navigation which is not applicable when playing fron the hard drive.

The DVD Specification requires .bup files as part of the structure. This is what a DVD player requires, your PC doesn't really care. You should be able to delete .bups and .ifos if you just want the main movie. However......
These files are tiny compared to the .vob files which contain the actual audio and video data. Deleting them will have little effect on the size. You may remove a few hundred KB (if that) from a multi GB size movie.

The BUP files are "Backup" data for the IFO files. If an IFO file gets corrupted, a DVD player will just go to the BUP (backup) and use that information. They're so small, eliminating them wouldn't be worth the time or effort. Better to use max compression and eliminate everything but the main movie. If you MUST have all the stupid extras that movie makers use to fill a disk up, then at least get rid of the sound tracks that you don't need and the sub-titles. Shrink will let you do all of that, and more.

You may loose some quality but you could always get a converter and convert the VOB files over to DivX.

I copy LOTS of movies to my hd to take to work on my laptop. I use shrink or clonedvd2 to copy it to the hd as a iso file. I then just open it with Nero image drive or Daemon Tools image something or another. If you want to copy it to a disk just use decrypter or CloneDVD or whatever you like. That's just how I do it seems the easiest to me...

Try using a little all in one tool called dvd2mpeg squeezer, it will convert the DVD video files to an mpeg1 format (smaller file).
