Today I just got a new DVD+/- burner installed and the first burn successfull!

A backup copy of Dead or Alive, XBV.

However, I used kHypermedia for the disk. (My first DVD+RW was from kHypermedia)

But ya'll say it isn't a good brand, correct? I also must do something with these 8X Memorex DVD-R's (Sadly.... I can't return them.)

I am also getting my ps2 chipped in about 2 weeks. (Ordered chip already) so I must get some good Disc's! :D

I was always scared to burn DVD's over than 1X, but you guys proved that there is nothing to be scared of, and to burn it at half the disc's maximum speed. Thanks! ;)

Well... the burner I got had high ratings says Newegg. My father bought it for me and it's an AOpen. (Not the best brand in the world, but hey!)

Here are the logs.

Brand is meaningless. See the names below. Your khypermedia is manufactured by CMC, while the Memorex is Ritek. These are good things to know before buying them, so try to look up the particular media you are interested in first to get the low down.
And BTW a lot of venom directed at disc manufacturers is just rote recitation without any experience that it's so. I have burned tons of cheap media and tons of better media and had great success with them all. A good burner will knock out a disc no matter who makes it 95% of the time, so if they work for you they are OK to use up. I do recommend buying good media though because these days the cost is nearly identical to the low grade junk, so you're really not saving any money, and are potentially risking some aggravation.

Hey Jigen--

A voice of reason on this web site! I was beginning to think this was a cult of anti-CMC people.

Jigen, when I first started backing up movies over two years ago, I bought whatever was available at WallyWorld usually Memorex (CMC Mag). After getting more involved here and learning about the difference in dyes, etc. and wondering why I was throwing away so amny coasters I decided to try Taiyo Yuden and was amazed, same comp, same software, same burn speeds but no coasters. Then I decided to start scanning some of my older burns on the first media types I tried. Whoa, I had discs that were a year old that weren't even playable anymore. Not due to scratches or anything, visually they appeared perfect. I lost alot of movie backups due to poor media. I can scan a year old Taiyo Yuden and get the same results as on the day I burned it. There is definitely a HUGE difference in the quality of dvd media available. I wish I would have learned that sooner!

As far as CMC Mag or any of these other companies quality now, I couldn't tell ya, I was burned (no pun intended) by them once too often and will never use their products again. I only use Ty's and Verbatims now and couldn't be happier with them. And to me, with the price difference being so small, I see no point in risking it. Give the good stuff a try, you won't regret it!

i had one single MCC004 (Made in India) disc barf on me the other day during the lead-in stage of the burn. (turned out i was able to reuse the disc as it hadn't been written to). Anyway, i'm returning something like 500 of those same exact discs as i don't want to risk further problems. A little uneducated and extreme my actions may be (sorry if i sound like Yoda there) but i won't waste time checking loads of the MCC004 just to i can continue using them.. i have shedloads of TY around the place so i can just offload the MCC004 even if that one single disc was a blip. my choice to be so drastic but mainly i can swap them for TY so what the hell....

my point is, we don't all just knock CMC, i will just as easily distrust a Verbatim or TY. I've used absolutely loads of Made in India Verbs in the past but if a decent disc of any brand/nationality/MID code gives me grief it's friends in the tub are under suspicion just as easily as if they were actually CMC coded. Like most ppl on the street i just want to burn endlessly without problems, i don't want or need to waste time money and effort faffing about with discs

Great point, as usual Creaky! I've just started playing around with the DL Verbs and after deciding on a speed (4X) pretty much like them. No playback problems yet. I still have not had very good results with the 16X media, Ty or Verb, so far they still play back fine but scan results seem terrible compared to the 8X media. My first spindle of Ty's were the 16X when they first came out. Scans weren't outstanding, but they still play fine.

I already use TY because I've been burning for years now. I have received these CMC as gifts many times though. This last christmas I got a 50pk and 25pk of two brands, both turned out to be CMC, so it seems like I always have CMC discs laying around. What's more important is that on my machine anyway, they burn fine and the scans look fine. I'm talking 75-80 quality score. Not fantastic, my TY will give me 90+, but still far below where a player will have problems with playback.
Do I love them? No. But when I can burn these and get a 70-80 score I can't consider them worthless because they happen to be CMC.

The important thing to consider is will they still play back error free down the road. It's been my experience that discs made with cmc mag dye usually burn fine and playback ok initially but in 6 months to a year they won't play back at all whereas my verbs always playback error free. If you want to use media made with cmc mag dye, power to ya but they wont touch my drives. Just my 2 cents.

No problems as yet. I have CMC that are going on 4 years now that still work fine. Not that I'm bragging, just saying. Like I said above, I don't love these, even "like" is overstating. They ARE an inferior media. Still, they can, and will, function well within tolerances IME, and do not seem to spontaneously crap the bed after 6 mo.
