What model or version DVD burner do you have ???

If it is not fairly recent , then it may NOT be a Dual Layer burner!!

And your burner may not recognize ANY DL disc!!!

@vicenton

The only DL discs that will ever go in my burner are from Verbatim. I've tried others, including those listed in pimpmex's post, and they just don't work.

Unfortunately there are no sales of Verbatim DL media in my local stores. The best price I have seen is $26.99 for a 10 pack of DVD+ DL. I got caught short, and need to get some DL's myself and will be ordering from the link below.

http://www.supermediastore.com/verbatim-double-layer-dvd-8x-95166...

Make sure you firmware is updated. That might allow you to burn those DL discs you just bought. But for quality and to avoid headaches, I now use Verbatim's exclusively for my DL needs...

try to make sure your standalone will play them. my lite-on recorder (returning from newegg ) would play dl's but my jvc will not even recognize a disk is in it. Its probally a year old (may have been at bestbuy for longer) was kind of annoying it wont play dl. just a thought b-4 you buy that big box of dls that your standalone wont play.

To see if newer firmware is available for your burner, we need the model number also. Please click on "my computer" then right click on your DVD drive and select "properties." Click the "hardware" tab at the top and you will find the model number.

As bunnyrip noted, MKM is indeed Verbatim. Verbatim is high quality media and the best DL media available. If I had your burner model, I could look up what DL media others have used with success.

@actech

Most pre 2004 standalone DVD players will not recognize DL media since burning to DL is relatively new. Booktyping to DVD-ROM has worked for all the old standalones I have tested - even Grandma's first generation DVD player! This is why I always buy DVD+ media and it is always booktyped DVD-ROM. Not one problem with playback compatibility yet!

There is a link in my signature to find out what media your standalone DVD player will accept or reject.

dvdidentifier or dvdinfopro could tell you if your DVD+R is booktyped... :)

simply put the DVD+R into your drive, open up one of the above programs and look for it after the "Disc & Book Type" as seen here in my example...

this one is properly booktyped to dvd-rom~ :)

WAIT, your bestbuy has a 25-pack Verb DVD+R DL spindle??? ...25-pack spindle for $40? i would grab it up if i were you~ :)

i've been getting the 10-pack spindles for $19.99 or the 20-pack spindles for $39.99, so essentially, you would be getting 5 pieces FREE from the 20-pack sale price @bestbuy~ :)

i haven't seen a 25-pack here @ my local bestbuy yet, only in the 10 or 20 pack spindles~ :)

i would get it if i were u...hehehe...yes, i'm on here for extended periods of time...but, not as frequently as i used to be...today is my day off, hence, i've been popping in and out very consistently today :)

it IS addicting as creaky mentioned. LOL

@ vicenton,

I believe it as you suspected. You have a DVD+RW burner and you were trying DVD-R disks. If it were a dual format drive it should not have been a problem. Maybe you can make a trade with someone for those DVD-R disks and get some DVD+R ones. Or, if you still have receipts, packaging & such, do a swap at the store you bought them at.

Also, your drive's "exact model number" would help. Cursory searching reveals too many drives in the "samsung write master" family.

Cincyrob is hooked, we should tell him about the 12 step program to ween him from AD.... now all we have to do is to get him to realize that he needs to become a Boston Red Sox Fan.
But seriously, about DL DVD's, I watch all of my movies on a 32" TV and see a slight difference in quality between 100% quality encoded DL disks and say 75% quality encoded single layer 4.7 Disks, does anyone else feel the same way who is watching on a similar size TV? I realize you lucky dudes who have 60 inch home theaters may be trying to eek out each extra pixel of resolution, but kinda curious as to how the rest uf us feel. Any opinions? Is the $2.00 DL disk worth the extra investment over the 30˘ single layer disk?

YUP im hooked..lolcant stay away from this site. i think i will stick with my reds the seem to win a series about every 12-15years. much better than ever 86years..lol just kidding. but my middle son i did just have to buy him a redsox hat...

i have only used about 10 DL disc. they are much nicer and a easy burn, i myself watch them on my jvc 32in screen. when i can only get around a 60% compression i can notice it on the 4.7disc but when i get a higher compression around 80+ it is hard for me to tell. i have found myself watching these movies to see how good of a job i have done with the burn instead of watching the movie for what it is....id rather see if i have any hangups or noticable pixels instead of enjoying the movie...lol go firgure, but i guess im not te onlyone like that...

Yup, you are hooked. Sure sign of a true addict. What started out as a simple way for the kids to watch DVDs in the minivan and not destroy them has become an obsession....Wonder if DocTY has a program to curb this????

His probable answer, burn two TYs and call me in the morning.

I trust this is an ok question to this forum since it does relate to DL. I tried to back up the movie Texas with a verbatim DL. I used DVD Fab and then Nero 6.0.18 (numbers may be wrong). When I tried to play it, the picture was cut up into little squares, and scenes were like that all through the movie. I thought I had checked both programs to burn with DL. Did I miss something? Thanks.

Man GQ is the WORST media you can buy.......found out the hard way,
long time ago.

Try Supermediastore.com........rima.com........meritline.com.

I picked up a 3pack @ Wal-Mart for about $11.00(verbatim) to try out.

LOL, we have a psychic in the house~ :) that's exactly what i would have said...you guys are quickly unravelling the "mysteries that are docTY" :)

@keyrom

while i don't have much experience w/ dvdfab program, i WILL suggest to use something other than Nero for the DL burn portion of your process~ :) i got well over 200+ DL backups now (Verbatim DVD+R DL and Ritek Ridata DVD+R DL) and have used DVD Decrypter, Imgburn, or the occasional clonedvd2 by slysoft for the BURN~ :)

so far, i only have about 3 coasters out of over 200+, which admittedly was either a bad disc or i did something wrong ON MY SIDE~ :) for DVD Decrypter, i simply use ISO READ...let it do it's thing, then find the .mds file and ISO WRITE to burn~ :) probably the easiest way for DL burns~ imgburn is only a BURNING prog, it can't rip/encode, so you could use a diff. prog. for that and use imgburn to BURN your output file~ :P

dvd decrypter is MY personal choice for DL backups, as old as it might be, it's still VERY good...

doc,

setting shrink to 8.5gb wont do as good as decypter? I tried 1 using recode and had problems with it. Guess I need to do some reading I just thought dl's would be the same as r's just bigger. also I checked that disk- not booktyped. so i'll try the jvc again when I get 1 properlly burnt

@ vicenton,

Sorry to digress, but can we get some basic specifications on your computer. Mother board, Hard drives, Optical drives,...and exactly how they are connected? Also what software you have on your system.

How did you acquire your computer? Is it a hand-me-down? Did you build it your self? Used parts or new?

Your DVD drive seems to have limitations as to what brand/type of disk it will work with. I brought up the manual on your "sh-s162a" and it was not impressive

I would suggest that you start using "Google" a little more. So much information available there. You can get a good education there.

I am not denigrating AFTERDAWN, Afterdawn does not have the same links or, intent as Google.

It is okay to ask for help, but you have to be ready to seek for help in other forms. Not just be "hand led" to your goal. Be your own master. Then help others.

i really DO agree with buik's comments~ :) google is YOUR FRIEND~ i know his comment wasn't directed at you, but it's a GOOD way to learn more about your standalones as well as your burners used to burn DL media~ :) standlones will be picky with DL media (some of them will be at least), booktyping the dvd+r DL media is a VERY good idea to "help" it read them, but it NOT guaranteed all the time...but it doesn't hurt to booktype dvd+R/dvd+r DL media IF you can...

i'll give ya a "freebie" right here since i'm on right now

in MY opinion, NO shrink won't do as good as decrypter? WHY you ask? because SHRINK is NOT a burning application, you STILL use nero to burn (whether u have it set automatically or manually) :) nero has had problems with the "layer break" for a LOT of people in the past, for me as well, that's why i no longer even ATTEMPT to burn a dual layer with nero~ :) dvd decrypter/imgburn handle the layer break MUCH better, this is from EXPERIENCE i'm telling you this, i HAVE tried with nero...one of the few "coasters" i made was when i was trying it out with nero as the burning app...yes, SOME people have good success burning with nero on DLs, but i for one, DID NOT, so i wasn't about to continue to make expensive "coasters"...

as buik mentioned, GOOGLE is ur best friend in terms of LEARNING more about dual layer media and burning onto them with your specific drive...ONCE you get the "PROCESS" down, you'll be a happy camper, but until then, absorb as much as you can regarding DL burns...good luck
