Hello, I've recently been thinking about purchasing a new slim ps2. I've never owned a ps2 before and know little about the modding world. I want to buy a ps2 that I will be able to use some sort of swap disc to play backup's of games but I know little about the compatiblity on newer ps2's. I would like to know firstly, If there would be an problem with swap magic or ultimate boot disc if I bought a brand new ps2. Also which swap disc is the best and what tools do I need to use. Thanks a bunch.

Swap Magic 3.6 with a fliptop works great for slimlines. There is no problem with using Swap Magic with the new pstwo's, although some games require fixes to play properly when using Swap Magic, but the fixes are easy to find and there are few games that require them. All you need for the install is a screwdriver, very easy install. The only problem is that with v14+, u need to open the pstwo which voids your warranty (if this is a concern). Make sure you use good quailiy media such as taiyo yuden.

save your money and buy a premodded system with a DMS4 Pro
or Matrix Infinity mod chip.
Swap magic is ok for a beginner, but people who know best will almost always choose a mod chip.
It has so many advantages over Swap Magic and is much easier to use.
Just stick in a back up disc and it plays just like the original.
check out teammodders.com for some pricing.

Tu13es, yes this will work. The coder has all the benefits of swap magic 3.6 with some extra features. The magic keys trick the ps2 to think that the lid is closed, an easy install. I too would recommend a chip over the swap magic method, but if your a beginner and can not solder or do not want to send your ps2 away, stick with swap magic/fliptop combo, it works great.

Here are some of the advantages. I am listing for a DMS4 Pro Chip because that is what i have.
1. Swap Magic needs to have some games rebuilt, patched or have dummy files removed, a chip doesn't
2. Swap Magic has some screen cut off, or screen off center when playing games from other regions, a chip doesn't
3. Swap Magic can not play any DVD9 (dual layer) back up games like GT4, God Of War, Champions Of Norath. They have to have stuff taken out of them so they fit onto DVD5 (single layer). A good chip will play those as well.
4. DMS4 Pro has a built in cheat device so there is no need to buy an AR Max, Codebreaker, Or Gameshark, a Swap Magic user will have to buy the cheat disc then try and figure out the right proceedure to get their back ups to work with codes. Also the chip works perfect with AR Max if you have it, works just like an original disc would.
5. DMS4 Pro has a built in HD Advance program for loading games from a hard drive if you choose to get one. It can also format the drive and load games from the disc to the hard drive. Swap Magic users have to buy a program called HD Advance for that.
6. With a chip there is no hassle at all about swapping discs, just stick in the back up and go.
7. DMS4 Pro has free upgrades that you can download about 1-2 times a year with added features and fixes, with Swap Magic improvemnets means buying a new set of discs.
8. with a chip you do not have to worry about your Swap Magic discs getting scratched or broken and having to be replaced, since making a back up copy of Swap Magic is useless (you would need an original copy to load the back up)
9. Using a slidecard is just harder on your system, manually poping the pin and pulling out the drawer can not possible be good for your system in the long run.
there may be more as i am doing that all from memory.
Now don't get me wrong, Swap Magic is ok. I used it for a while when i first started out. But after i got my chipped system, the V7 that i used Swap Magic with went into the closet and has never been taken out again. The chip is just so much easier and i never have to worry about if the game needs patching or rebuilding or has dummy files, or is from another region. It just makes my life more simple.

Hmm...it turns out my slim PS2 is a 7500x model. I've read in a few places that a MagicKeys will not work on these without opening the system, is that true?
I guess it's not a huge deal if I void the warranty, but I'd prefer not to. Like I said, I killed an Xbox once working with a mod chip, so I'd like to stay away from that if possible.

then i gues those things we put tomato sauce on won`t be the only chip i enjoy in the futer. but as i`ve rushed into buying swap without taking your advice first, i`ll stick with it untill using the slide becomes anoying. a little birdy told me there are chips which do not need soldering. can this be true?

I'm not sure there is a soderless chip for v14. The desc I've seen are for v5-v11. If you want a chip and con't get a solderless, you may want to have it installed for you.If your fine motor/soldering skills are in question, yoy may not want to risk messing up your ps2.

yes there are solderless chips,
http://www.dms3.com/cgi-bin/dms4ezi/site.pl?page=home but i think they only work with V5-V11 systems, and many people break them or screw them up trying to install them.
That is why i say, get it done by a pro. A good reputable web site that you can send the system to and have them do it.
Or just save some money, find a reputable site like teammodders.com, and buy a premodded system.
