I backed up a copy of King kong that I bought recently. I had to use dvdfabdecrypter. It decrypted fine burned fine, but when I try to play it in my samsung dvd recorder it says this disk cannot be played in your region. Copied it twice once with just region 1 which my dvd recorder is I also tried burning it with all regions. Both say the same thing. I used DVD shrink to burn it. I have tried other dvd's and they have worked this and Life of Brian have been the only two i have had problems with am I missing something?

@hacksorus
Both dvdfab decrypter & shrink will remove the region code making it region free.
Did you by chance pick up a PAL version of King Kong?

No it is am NTSC version. I had to use Dvdfabdecrypter to copy it then used dvdshrink after that. I also copied Narnia, Walk the line, and Monty Python Life of Brian and the same thing is happening. But when I copied Wedding Crashers, Jarhead, and Eurotrip they all work fine. Two of the DVD players in my house the DVD's work fine in the recorder and an old Sony DVD player that is about 6 years old I get that region message. I have tried it once region free and also using region 1, still get the same message. Not sure what the problem could be. The manual for the dvd recorder says that it will play dvd's labeled with region 1 or all. Thanks for the reply any suggestions?

What type of disks are you backing up with? Are they DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+/-R DL, DVD+/-RW, etc...

If you are using anything other than DVD-R or DVD-R DL, then you need to make sure you are changing the booktype to ensure maximum compatibility, not doing this can cause old players to do some crazy stuff. Just a suggestion, might not be your problem.

I am using DVD-R discs. It has something to do with the region coding not the disc itself. I can't figure out why some are working and others do not. Like I said before Wedding Crashers, Eurotrip, War of the Worlds, and Jarhead worked fine. King Kong, Narnia, Life of Brian, and Walk The Line will not play in that DVD recorder it gives me this message "this disc cannot be played in your region" But two of the DVD players in my house can read them and play them just fine.

Went to K-mart last night and bought a 35.00 dvd player with a 10.00 rebate and have not had any problems with that dvd player. Going to pick up one more. I will just use the dvd recorder for stuff on television I want. That sucks that the dvd player is about 5 years old, got one when they first came out and spent about 450.00 for it and it will not play those discs. Then go and buy an el cheapo from k-mart and not have any problems. Live and Learn I guess.

Hello- I have a few dvd's i bought in korea that have a 2 and/or a 6 code on them (both, not sure which number means what), and DVD Shrink downloaded them fine, but after i burned them, my dvd will not play them. is there a way on DVD Shrink to go into the preferences and make the code all-region, or do i have to use DVD Decrypter or dvd fab decrypter? and will dvd fab just take off the code automatically? (because there is nowhere on dvd fab decrypter to set anything on my version, i just pop in the disc and push go). if i use DVD Decrypter, is there somewhere in those options to set "remove all codes" or something similar? i'd appreciate it, also any dvd fab decrypter instructional websites would be helpful. thank you very much.

oh, and i forgot--i don't think they are PAL dvd's, because that designation does not appear on the dvd or the box, but how do i tell if they are PAL dvd's?

Re: how to tell if a movie is NTSC or PAL?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Load it into GSpot (if its an AVI, mpg or vob) and if its frame rate is 25.0, its PAL and 23.976 or 29.97, its NTSC

You can download GSpot from:

If you have Nero you can use Nero Vision. Will take a bit. If you use that program you'll receive a warning saying something like 'mostly pal format do you wish to keep this format' click no and it will convert to NTSC.
Or you can use the vobblanker (free) method - faster. Will usually work in most DVD players.

thanks binkie

i used VOB blanker--though i have NO idea how that really works or what it does--i just changed the PAL designation to NTSC and then processed it, then ran it through DVD Shrink (did i have to do that or can i burn directly after i do the VOB blanker?), and then burned with Nero and it worked. but i'm not sure what you mean--my Nero never said that at any point--where? it didn't happen on my Nero express, it just accepted the files and burned them.
so i know that dvd fab decrypter and DVD Decrypter will take off the region code--that worked well, but i guess you always have to tell it which specific region to take off--1 to 6--there's no program that is EASY TO USE and takes any and all region codes off totally?--but are there any other prgrams that translate the PAL to NTSC besides blanker, and that are, like, VERY easy and accessible to use?

thanks tons

oh, and another thing--one guy here told me that DVD Shrink will remove the region code, but i cannot find anywhere on the preferences that will do that, or does it automatically do it with each disk it downloads and compresses? looked all over but there was nowhere to put in what region the disc was.

mixwell ,
Welcome to the forum. In Shrink after it has analyzed the movie go to Backup. Then click on DVD Region and make sure a check mark is in Region Free. Now you are good to go. You can even set it to the region you are in but I keep mine region free

You will only get that message in Nero Vision otherwise Nero will just burn it regardless of the format.
The other one that does this 'masking' method is IFO Edit -another quick one.

Might want to try it. I've only used vobblanker or Nero.

thanks car.mike--i'll try and see if i notice that button now on DVD Shrink before i download the dvd into the burning-ready file.

and also binkie, i'll try ifo edit tonight, too, although now that i got blanker to at least switch it over and it burned well and plays, i'll stick with that; also, i doubt i'll buy many dvd's from china again, and if i do, rarely--just that i found two old-film dvd's not available here yet that china had dvd's of for only $1 a piece on e-bay! and they are great copies, or at least the one i did burn and test.

thanks!

If you try ifo edit let us know how it turns out. I don't do that many either - a few here and there - I usually do them for friends who end up buying a PAL dvd off ebay also.
