I've been on a bit of a budget for a while now and after a lot of careful thought I bought an NEC ND-3550A DVD burner to replace my previous burner. My DVD player is a cheap and chearful Alba DVD114 which although seems to play anything I throw at it (including NTSC DVDs without a hack) had problems with DVDs sticking at random places which were burnt with my old burner.

While I was researching my replacement burner I discovered there was more to burning DVDs than met the eye - the different types of media and this is where I'm running into a few problems...

In the past I've been using any cheap brand I can find, usually all bought from the same bloke at the car boot sale on spindles of 50 discs. He recently sold me a box of Datawrite grey DVD-R 4.7GB saying that people were raving about them on the net and, just found the code for them to be ProdiscF01. From looking up this code on the net it seems most people don't like them.

What makes a good media and is there anything about the color of the undersides that makes any difference? I'm pretty new to DVD burning so any help in basic terms would be appreciated.

ZebUK- The CatMan is Right! Taiyo Yuden & verbatim Are the best media Choices! I realize you are on a budget But it's kind of like a Pay for it now or you'll pay for it later if your using poor quality media ! Luckily The Major retailers BestBuy, circuitcity, OfficeDEPOT ect. Run sales about once a week and usually it's either 50ct. spindles of Verbatim media or 50ct. spindles of Sony media for $14.99 or so or about .30cents per disc or so ! And if you get the sony media the 8X dvd+r is actually Taiyo yuden made if you buy the sony's that are made in japan - The DVD-R 8x sony ( MAde in JAPAN) are good but not taiyo yuden made !alternatively if you are looking for a bargain in dvd media check out OFFICEDEPOT when they have a buy one get two free sale on their brand of media ! The 8x media is made by RITEK and although it is not quite the quality of verbatim or Taiyo yuden it's very good none the less ! just a thought ! recomendations 1. Taiyo Yuden or MAde in JAPAN Sony DVD+R , FUJI Made in JAPAN media DVD+R & DVD-R = Taiyo Yuden
2. Maxell DVD media ( Nade in JApan)- By hitachi maxells parent company!
3. Riteks ( Made in taiwan but very good media - Available under Ritek name also OFFICEDEPOT brand media & Somw Maxells made in taiwan !
RicohJPn - ricoh made media ? had'nt had much experience with theese but supposed to de okay! But you can't go wrong with Taiyo yudens or Verbatims ZebUK my friend good luuck & happy burning !

Many thanks for those replies, I'll be hooking my browser up to those sites later and hunting down some media :)

OK last question.

What exactly is so bad with ProdiscF01? So far I'm having the best burns I've ever had. I understand its a long-term thing but what exactly happens with the media and how?

The inconsistent quality ... you can get good batches and then you can get some real crap ... ProDisc makes very good CDs but, like I said, the DVDs will end up biting you ...

ZebUK- Catfreak is right on that score - Taiyo Yuden & Verbatim Are conistant in that they have excellent Quality & excellent quality control! so batch to batch you get pretty much the same every time where as with other brands quality can be hit or miss !

Yes, they are Taiyo Yudens ... and since they are Sony branded, I'd say that they are the genuine discs ... enjoy!

sweet, not sure what bigtox meant about the sony -r's...guess i just confused something, if i may i asked a question a while back that didnt get an answer...

"hello, instead of making a thread i figured why not ask this here if thats ok...i got a 50 pack of mij sony 8x DVD+R, the mid reads "YUDEN000 T02 (000)", got these from sams club, they burn great no problems just curious when i look at the data side under the light i can see a darkened ring around the outer edge. now what puzzles me is this ring ranges in size from around 1/4 inch to about an inch (roughly), just wondering what does this ring represent and why is the size variable?hope that makes sense and thanx for any input.

edit: sorry could have sworn the label said 8x but i since threw it out, Nero info tool tells me it can burn 2.4x 4x 8x 8.0x 12x"

just my curious nature, any insight about this?

YudenT02 is the code for +R Taiyo Yuden made 8x discs .. what Nero is informing you of is that you can overburn the discs up to 12x

about the ring .. does it vary on the same disc or is the range of ring width over several discs? What a dark ring around the outer edge is is the unburned portion of the disc .. If you burn 2GB to a disc, you will have a very wide ring .. while, if you burn 4.38GB to a disc, the ring will be barely noticeable
