I have been wanting to start this thread to demystify the ever so popular threads about preffered media.

after looking through multiple forums (including this one and cdfreaks) and reading countless threads about preffered media i came to a conclusion. that conclusion is: there is no 100% guranteed media. plain and simple. why do i say this? well if you've been through enough forums you'll realize that every major manufacturer gets praised and rejected almost evenly, except a few that are no longer in production (such as the kodak gold, and philips silver premium) other than certain asian manufacturers-which now some are giving their brand name out to smaller manufacturers(im not sure if they use the same chemicals or not.). so basically this means that NO media is trustable. well how can that be? here's what i've learned: it has to do with the drive's support for the disk's chemicals (or vice versa depending on how you look at it.). theoretically every media can be burned at 99% garunteed successs rate, IF burned by a supported drive.

from my experience and what i've read of other's experience the two drives that have the largest support for media are Lite-on and plextor.

notice im excluding sony, nec, and pioneer. while these are definently good (if not excellent) drives they don't give a good support for media (according to my and other's experiences.).

my primary burning drive is a lite-on. and i can proudly say that i have only had reacurring problems with one media type- "staple's brand dvd"(i havent yet checked to see if they are the ones to manufacture them but i will do so within a week.)- and let me tell you, i've bought a wide variety of disks, including labelled name brand and labelled off brand.

what I would like to add to this furom would be proof of the above statement. however i neither have the money or time to do this alone. if you want to post your scans here. i know cdfreaks has started one as well, but i would like for us at afterdawn to have one as well.

thx and happy burning~sickley

Liteon is your #1? Sorry, but disagree. NEC drives are definitely better, cheaper, and lead the way in speed and reliability. In fact I would put them as the #1 drive manufacturer today, followed by your #2 Plextor. Liteon may make the top 5, but no way I'm putting one in my rig.

Sony drives are either Sony, Lite-On, or BenQ. If you scan one of the Staples brand media, it should give you a media code which identifies the manuacturer, right? I believe the Staples is made in China now, perhaps Playo?

I know what you're thinking Jigen, after all i thouhgt the same thing before. but my nec simply doesnt preform as well as my lite-on. oh and my lite-on cost less supports more formats and is faster. im not trying to start another arguement here...POST YOUR SCANS OF BURNS and you can PROVE me wrong.

@blivetnc as far as i know lite-on is a subdivision of h.p. (scarry i know..) however i went to their site and they are actually their own corporation-although they may be owned by sony or h.p. they just manufacture their own products

ok...maybe i went a bit too far. i guess im going to say that there is no proof that one drive is better than another. and that's why i wanted to start this thread, im not someone who can buy 10 drives, 50 different media brands, and then spend the time to burn and scan and post all this on a forum. maybe what i'm asking is too much for this forum?

My point was that with all of the re-branding going on these days, it is really hard to simplify or categorize brands of DVD burners unless you specify which is the original maunfacturer, Sony DRU-800A is a lite-On, Sony DRU-810 is a BenQ. Sony DRU-510A is a Sony (as far as I know) and with the possibilities of cross flashing drives, it is standing on thin ice to say some drives support more media than others. I dare to state that there isn't any drive which makes CMC-Mags perform like Taiyo Yuden disks. If you read the forums, you can really learn which burners and which media produce the more consistant results, and which burners cause nothing but headaches.

I use a LiteOn burner, and am very happy with it.
When it's time to buy another burner, it will also be a LiteOn........

i have only skim-read the thread so far, and what i'll add is that scans alone do not prove good/bad media....they provide only a guideline on the few discs scanned

@Sickley - you'll find masses of info on endless scan after scan (and all types of media possible) done at cdfreaks, some of those guys seem to endlessly scan every disc there is/buy every known drive there is, then endlessly scan even more...

..we over here at AD are (in the main) about some scans, then all-out real-world testing ie endless backing up and even a lot of watching of the resulting burns/recopying them, more than enough proof in that form of testing. Along with my own bad media woes in the past, I myself have dissected literally 1000's of Nero logfiles and within them have seen soooo many woes of bad media, resolved by tweaking a few settings and replacing crapola media with good. My favourite phrase is something like "when all the correct tweaks (ie firmware updated, enough free memory, DMA on, conflicting software removed etc etc) have been made to someone's burning setup, bad media is nearly always the only thing sat they're looking guilty, and when it's replaced with something decent, voila success for most cases".

as I thought...... newbie to AfterDawn Addict!! Being here, and after burning over a thousand disks..... I'm with Creaky and Catfreak!!! most problems result from bad media! Get your firmware up to date, DMA on, Burn at right speeds, but most importantly burn the good stuff! It's so easy to get the CMC Mags as it is to get the MCC or Taiyo Yuden disks! So why cause any problems with using inferior media when we know what's good and what's not! I've done my own scans, so have most of the older members here in AfterDawn, and it all comes down to this: use what works for you and your drives! If you want CMC MAGs and you're happy with them.... so be it. But it's been most members experiences that they are crapola media that causes a lot of problems that could easily been avoided by using the MCC or Taiyo Yuden media. We will leave all the scanning on media for you newbies who have time to do all of that. but here is a decent media guide that might shed some light for you:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
it needs a little updating but it's still a "guide" on what's good and what's not so good. happy scanning to you all.

After a not so good result with OD branded 16x Ritek P16 I have decided that it's gonna be Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims from here on in for me. The results that I obtain from these brands are significantly better than anything else that I have tried.

Media is important.

Loco, how's it goin?

With the BenQ Soidburn feature, how can anyone say that media support is not amoung the best? Afterall, these burners can learn their way into performing with new media.

Not attempting to carry on/start a debate/argument, just thought I'd add more data.

My previous drive was a LiteOn which I bought for £60UKP about a year ago. Worst purchase I made. Not many media would play in many DVD players properly, most would stick at random spots and some wouldn't even validate after burning.

My new burner is an NEC ND-3550A and although it can burn at stupid speeds I prefer to burn as slow as the media will let me. Everything I've burnt so far plays no problem in all players and thats using the same [various] media that my LiteOn was burning on.

As for read speed, my NEC far outperforms my LiteOn although the LiteOn is a lot more tolerant with scratched discs.

@ LOCO

So far I really like it. I have only burn a couple backups so far, but the scan results are real good. I tried scanning with the NEC and end up with poor scan results, not a bad burn, just poor scanning ability of the NEC drive, whereas the Benq will give a better scan of the same disc.

For the money, great buy. You will like the 1655.

You can't go wrong with a benq drive (stay away from the 1670, they changed the chipset) and MCC or TY media. If you like spending more money you can go with a plextor drive although imho they are not any better than benq's. Just my 2 cents.

Sickley,

Your first post had a lot more truth in it than most people will acknowledge. Not all discs are the same quality; but if the firmware is tuned properly, many of the "bad" discs will perform much better unless there is a mechanical problem or process problem. (Tilt is a big problem, and it is plaguing printable discs from many manufacturers.) Firmware updates DO NOT necessarily fix a problem with a particular disc--that only happens if the firmware version actually addresses that disc. "I updated firmware; the disc still doesn't work; the disc is crap" is not a logical conclusion unless one is positive that the disc's MID code was added to the write strategy table and one can prove a particular parameter is out of spec. Members of this forum claim you can't go wrong with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden discs because they are excellent quality. That's good advice. Members also claim other brands are poor quality because so many people have had problems and warn people to stay away from them. That is not always true--most, but not all, problems are related to firmware support.
