With the BenQ Soidburn feature, how can anyone say that media support is not amoung the best? Afterall, these burners can learn their way into performing with new media.
!Warning! Nub alert !Warning!-what exactly is this soidburn feature? does it actually improve its preformance with certain medias?? please explain!!! :)

found this drive at walmart $50 clearance, what do you think?
im probably not going to buy it, the only reason i would is so i that i can do LS and RAM, think im gonna hold out for a benq with the same format coverage.

i would actually suggest AGAINST it in the benq flavor...namely, the DQ60 model...a buddy of mine has it (as he was too impatient to wait for the 1650) and despite several firmware updates, it STILL does NOT perform (quality wise) as the 1640/1650/1655 models...

the dvd-ram is NOT worth it in MY opinion, only because the media is expensive and compatibility with standalones is MUCH lower than DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+R DL (booktyped on all the dvd+r/DL format as well) :)

that's just my suggest from a CLOSE friend of mine that has the Benq w/ dvd-ram capabilities...if Lightscribe is ur thing, i would def. go with the Benq 1655 :) untold success from those that have and use it today.

that's just my suggestion...the 1655 Benq fits quite nicely within your $50 price range too...from newegg~ :)

I have used some Micro Advantage units on 4 computers I have used myself and also used by others I know and they have all been good to use and cost $40 from Office Max last year. I have also found that Micro Center sells a Samsung DVDRW for about $39.99 on a regular basis in Mpls where I live and had it on sale for $33.99 a week back. I haven't found a great deal of difference with the various drives I have used the past few years and most of the problems have come from some of the copy protection schemes put on various media I have tried to watch or listen to on my computer. Root kit installs that act just like vicous virus attacks are much more of a problem than any slight incompatibility with a drive and media.

There are a number of things which are been overlooked here.
1. AZO Metal dye. This dye is used by alot of different manufacturers such as Gigastorage, CMC, Infosmart, TY, MCC and the list goes on. While I agree that AZO is a great dye Hitachi/Maxell discs (MXL coded) do not use it. AZO is inorganic while MXL and Ritek both use Organic dyes. Ritek is crap MXL is excellent. Infosmart AZO discs are rubbish MXL Organic dye is excellent.
2. Firmware support. We all should know that firmware can make or break a discs performance. The LG 67B burner can burn TYGO1's so bad that up to 50% will fail. I know I have one and have over 250 TYG01's left. So saying that TY is crap media because they burn crap in my LG is wrong. So if we accept that firmware is the problem here then firmware is responsible for other discs that burn bad in certain burners. Now the amount of time put into firmware support and testing for TY and MCC would be orders of magnatude more than is done for say LGE08 discs. So if these lower discs had as much time and money put into firmware suport you would absolutly see better burns. There was alot of testing done on CD freaks with some + dvd's from China and after playing around with burn stratergies they were getting consistant good burns that you would be happy with.

3. Quality control. This is where the big boys (TY, MXL, MCC) have the biggest advantage. They use the stampers less before changing them. They are far stricter with which discs go to market. I have spindles of LGE08's made in China. Now the packaging was so crap the discs were moving around freely. Now this will add small scratches etc and will show up in quality testing.
Now if these smaller companies have better QC as well as better firmware support they will be better options.
The biggest issue for me is discs becomming unreadable after a while with no damage done to the disc, aka Princo, BeAll and Ritek. Some of these lesser brands such as Gigastorage, Infodisc etc do not have the same problem with this area.
Just my two cents.
But I agree, if TY, Sony, MCC and MXL are the same price or slightly higher than say LGE08's then I will buy them.

you've made some VERY good points, but i'm more interseted in drive/firmware quality than disc quality. i can buy practically any type of media and still get decent burns. i like to call that carefree burning :)
Im convinced that my media cost considerably less than yours. for these three reasons: 1. Generic/smaller name brand companies generally have lower prices in order to compete with the larger more popular companies 2. buying media in store means i dont have to pay extra money for shipping (nor do i have to wait.). 3. not only are stores more competitive than online, but they tend to swap out merchandise more often- meaning more and better sales.
And yet i can still get good burns, and consistant burns at that.

but with the right(updated)firmware. and quality (ty verbs)media and the right program to burn with you will acheive perfect burns EVERYTIME. since getting my firmware updated bout a month ago and only useing quality (ty's/verbs)media i have yet to have a failed burn(which equal's about 100burns)kinda like the real estate quote"loction location location) its more like "quality qualit quality".just my point of view.
and as for the programs to use. im sure everyone here at AD would recomend AnyDVD and clonedvd2. 90%of the time.unless you needed to do a rebuild etc.....

I read alot here on the forums about firmware upgrades and I personally don't know what serves as an indicator that your firmware needs updating. I have never had to update any of my drives firmware. My question, Is the need to do this drive altering procedure perhaps a little over rated or premature?:P

@cincyrob: That is very true, however i dont feel the need to buy ty, and btw i have had cmc's show up in verbs recently so i dont trust them anymore :( . I do of course love AnyDVD, however im beginning to be drawn away from clonedvd2. no to say that its bad. it does a perfect job at what it aims for: simple, fast, h.q. dvd copying. but im starting to use combination of programs since clonedvd2 is almost over simplified. i'll use dvdshrink to shrink down my menus more in order to get an even better movie quality (important for copying DL dvd's), or if im copying a 4.7 or less ill just use AnyDVD & Nero in on-the-fly mode for extremely fast burns (averages 12-14 minutes TOTAL)

@N2DVD: thats really on a person to person basis, if you havent had any problems then its best just to let it be; some times a firmware update can screw things up. however if you want to improve performance you can spend a day or two finding the best setup. What most of these people are doing is attemping to achieve an average of 95%-100% scores, which is an admirable thing (and probably worthwhile), but to most of us its not completely necessary.
