Are you sure it's a DVD burner and not a DVD reader, CD burner? If your drive is labeled DVD/CDRW, it's likely not a DVD burner but a "combo" drive. It reads DVDs but only burns CDs.

When you use DVD Decrypter the model/description of the drive is given in the menu where you are allowed to select the drive. Exactly what description does DVD Decrypter provide? It also gives the firmware version, usually a 3 or 4 letter/number combination after the name of the drive. You can also download DVD Identifier from the link in my signature below and get the same information.

If this is the same drive you've been using to backup DVDs in the past, then it is obviously a DVD burner. However it would still be helpful to have the complete descriptive name of the drive and its firmware version. What brand and speed of media are you using? Have you tried uninstalling the burner with WinXP Device Manager and then allowing WinXP automatically reinstall it upon startup? Is the DMA enabled for the burner?

According to the records the latest firmware is BSY3 for your drive.

Get it here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_result.php?kaj=1&isces

Just download it to the desktop and double click on it and it will self install or give you directions.

I don't think Sony is providing firmware updates for this burner. Fortunately it's a rebadged Liteon SOHW-1633S for which there are firmware updates. I suspect your firmware is so old it's no longer recognizing media codes on the newer media and that may be causing your problem. Here's a link to the Liteon 1633 firmware:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1934

As 9mmruger1 stated, just click on the firmware version number and download it. It's an executable so just open the downloaded firmware and follow the prompts as needed.

When i do that search this is what is says:

SONY DVD RW DW-D22A - No Firmware Updates Available
(Known Firmware: BYS1, BYS2, BYS3)
Use LtnRPC to reset or disable the Region Counter. Click Disable and your drive will be region free!
OEM Liteon SOHW-1633S

There are no firmware updates for that drive that I can locate which is why I sent badboy to the Liteon firmware. I know people have used Liteon firmware for that Sony drive. I check around and see what the deal is. Back later.

Badboy, you might try the Sony 710A firmware. It also uses the same 1633 Liteon drive:

http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html#DRU-710A

Here's a thread at CDFreaks dealing with flashing your drive:

@gurnard

Do you know where he can find any firmware for his drive? I can't find any and it seems the CDFReaks people were using the Sony 710A firmware for the D22A burner. The rpc firmware page just lists the known firmware for that burner without any links to the firmware and says no updates are available. I think he/she likely needs all the help we can muster. :)
