Ok, I know I'm setting myself up to getting torched by people for not searching around enough but I need an answer and I have searched.

My PS2:
- modchip installed
- 39001

Can I use a hard drive (internal or external) to play games off of it rather than playing them from discs? My modded XBOX can do this seamlessly and I never have to worry about wearing out the DVD/CD lens. Not to mention, the loading times for games are significantly less.

That's all I want to know. Direct me to a link, answer me yourself, whatever you like, but I'd just like to know which direction I have to go on this to make it happen.

Thanks so much for your time.

yes, you can use a hard drive to save ps2 games, as long as you dont own a v14 ps2. There are a few threads concerning this issue. The fiend has posted a few websites detailing hdd compatibiity.

http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/ - list of compatible hdd's.

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/252193 - answers A LOT of commom questions about ps2.

Thanks 2 The fiend for his postings as it provides a lot of help to noobs

Yes, and with that you will get much faster load times
then off a disc.
If it is an internal drive (for older chunky PS2) then you will need a disc called HD Advance 3.0

if you go with a USB hard drive then USB Extreme, i only suggest USB if you have no other options.

Or if you have a good modchip like a DMS4 Pro then you are set as the ToxicOS flash for that chip has a build in HD Advance, and other programs either there or as add ons that can format the hard drive, and load games on the hard drive strait from the original disc.

and thanks to svtstang for his re-posting of The_Fiend's posting :)

Thanks guys,
You've been very helpful! I actually had some guy give me some really sarcastic reply about how to use the search tool.

Thing is, I'm just coming into PS2 modding now and most of the posts are a couple of years old with respect to harddrive mods. So, it makes me wonder if there isn't some established way of doing this by now that is easier as the methods have gotten better. Also, the HDAdvance/HDLoader thing is really confusing.

So, I have a copy of HD Loader and Advance. I'm trying to burn it to a CD-R but my PS2 won't read my discs. They're Memorex which I guess is part of the problem. But, as soon as I get some good discs and I can boot up that program, can I just throw the harddrive in there and get going with putting games on it? What is this thing I keep reading about having to use some kind of Memory Card exploit? Does that apply to me?

Thanks again, guys!

not sure about exploits as i have a chip in mine.
But i do know that you will also have to format it before you put games on it.
If either of those programs can do that you are set. If not you will need a program for your PC, i think it is called Winhiip or something, then put the HDD in there and format from the PC before you install it into the PS2

Again, thank you for the continued help.

So, it's pretty unanimous then that since I have a modchip I don't need to worry about memory card tooling?
