Just need the right tools!
Best & easiest is running AnyDVD in the background with Shrink.
Free 21 day trial - http://slysoft.com

Or rip the files with the free DVDFab Decrypter then process those files thru shrink.

Bondafide1, there is a way to backup any movie. You just need the right tools as binkie7 incidated. If you problem is with Hostel, use this guide created by Alkohol. You can aplly the procedures in this guide you other movies than Hostel. This guide is a very good, detailed guide on how to back up movies using free programs.

Hey all, I have run into this same issue with Shrink. On a couple of movies I get those errors, and after digging around I found AnyDVD, as suggested here.

It seems to work great but I'm a little worried about spending the $39 and then having someone, (like Sony or Disney), figure this out right away. Also I'm not crazy about adding yet another item to my startup group. (last look I had 73 processes running, ...sigh)

Currently I rip with Shrink, and compress again with VirtualDub to .AVI, and that's already enough steps for me, ya know?

Are there any other ways that don't require several steps? Know of any plans to update DVDShrink?

As far as updating, Shrink is dead in the water.....People successfully still use it with AnyDVD runing in the background....

@hppyfngy
AnyDVD has been hanging quite well with anything Sony & Macrovision has come out with. In fact they usually have an update to fix a problem movie before it's released on DVD.
Will they always be able to? Don't know but so far they're batting a 1000.

AnyDVD is the best purchase for your money you will ever make.

Also, you might want to check and see if they are offering discounts for afterdawn members. They do this very often. Might save you a couple bucks!

before i sent a message about making a backup copy of Hostel and sony movies in general..i tried my usual way using DVD Decrypter and then the fabdecrypter..now the DVD Decrypter gave me an error after maybe 2 minutes of copying...so i switched over to fab...it started copying and then bang...i see a mouse arrow in the corner of my monitor and my screen freezes up...so i rebooted...uninstalled fab and reinstalled it...tried again...same thing...freeze...i haven't tried alcohol's way yet...but that looks like the best option here...what do you think sony did to that dvd to make my computer freeze...

For your money, AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 I found is the best. I've used DVD Shrink and DVD Decyrpter for years and it worked for the most part until last november I think it was when i ran into 'Stealth' by Sony. Since then I've switched to Slysoft all the way and never looked back. Memoirs of a Geisha, Fun with Dick and Jane, Disney's Chronicles of Narida, etc... it's all good and this software package is constantly updated. I know it'll cost you some bling but if you consider how much time / headached you would save shuffling the free stuff around, even at minimum wage, you save a lot more in time.

Well, I have tried just about everything stated in all these threads about the various movies from SONY !

The combo I have found to work, and work very well, is DVDFab to hard drive. Open 1 Click DVD Copy Pro 1.0.0.9 and point to folder, then run and burn. I never burn a DVD vid (and some of you might be having a problem because of the speeds your burning at) faster the 4x.

Another thing, I have 3 systems here, 2 are 3.2gtz and faster, then I have a little 1.2gtz with 512 ram set up. The slower 1.2 gtz system, believe it or not, actually produces better back up copy's then the faster systems. I look at it this way, the faster you drive down the raod, the more chances you have of missing something. Same with a computer, faster does not always mean better.
